Laptop recommendations

What's the best one for use in the garden or conservatory where it is quite bright?

lol HP... so true

Seriously though SS, my old acer laptop had a crystalbright screen which is supposed to reduce reflections.
Whilst I cant say its perfect, and I did have to do some positioning of the screen angle, it has allowed me many many times to use it in the garden on bright sunny days and still see the screen to work on it.   Best position was on the garden table with me sat with my back to the sun.   I used to get a nice shoulder tan that way :D  It was definitely better than my daughters new HP laptop in bright sunlight..  and also things like my phone/ipod..  which I cant see at all in bright sun.

I dont know if acer still do the crystalbright screens as my lappy was a good one in its time, it now must be about 7/8 yr old.  Still works ...... until the graphics card gets too hot :(

This makes the screen much more readable particularly in extremely bright conditions such as outdoors although in situations where there is direct light facing the screen the high gloss can cause distracting reflections.

Thank you for the pointer Kitz. I have been meaning to get a new laptop for ages. Now I have a reason to buy one.

@HP  That is nearly as good as the cardboard shroud I have constructed. The one I have I cannot get my head inside it though. The shroud is too small not my head too big. ;)

Glad you didn't get too miffed.  ;D

On a serious point I wouldn't even try myself as I've never seen a backlit screen that was useable in bright sunlight, I'd assume some shading would be needed.
And, dare I say it, as one gets older (I'm technically a "silver surfer" myself) the eyes are definitely less tolerant of glare. There's a good reason for this to do with changes in the eye with advancing years experience.

The only screen that DOES work well is the Kindle, but that's obviously a very different "kettle of fish" entirely.

I wouldn't get miffed at all HP. It was meant in a lighthearted way I think.
I'll have to do some more research to find something suitable.
I wouldn't expect to be able to have the sun on the screen without some form of shading. The one I have now is an old Toshiba and whilst in normal ambient light is quite good, as soon as any bright light shines on the screen it is useless to work with. Even if the light shines on a shirt it reflects back off the screen. I tried without the shirt and it's still the same.

Best position was on the garden table with me sat with my back to the sun.
I can see the logic of that, in that a fairly reflective screen is then going to be pointing back at objects that are actually showing their shaded sides.
As long as your eyes are shielded from the sun (visor etc.) then it can work.
