I read an article on teletext last week saying prison officers have to wear slippers at night walking the landings so it doesn,t disturb the inmates.Yesterday on the news it stated that prison officers in Birmingham are calling the inmates by their first names and knocking on cell doors before entering.What next a visit from father christmas!!!!!!!!!!!
No wonder the prisons are full.

I pointed a friend who is a prison officer (Leicester Prison) at this post. Here's what he said :

"The slippers thing is nonsense. Health & Safety would have a fit if POs were wandering around in slippers. As far as knocking goes, yes we do knock and then enter. We don't wait for a reply but knocking is common courtesy. We don't knock when we do a search."

He's been a PO since 1990 and he says they've always knocked if the door isn't wide open.

lol "soft-soled footwear" doesn't necessarily mean slippers though - it could be simply like rubber soles of trainers rather than clunky shoes!
