Spurious Windows updates released on 22 May
« on: May 22, 2012, 05:40:30 PM »

It appeared that out of course updates had been released by Microsoft: must be very critical.  Three updates (KB2518864, KB2572073 and KB2633880), all for .NET 2 were duly downloaded and installed.  After very few minutes the same updates were notified.  Puzzled, I download and installed them again.  Deja vous followed as I was notified for the third time.  Three times?  Something wrong.

It turns out that the .NET updates were superseded by those released on last Patch Tuesday, 8 May.

This happened with Windows XP.  It would be interesting to know if this also affected 7 and Vista.

Mr Ballmer must have clicked the wrong button.

Lots of threads around the net on this one.
XP just keeps asking for the updates again and again- its just XP
Clearly a major messup at MS

I'd hazard a guess that some date signing is wrong somewhere on MS servers, so it thinks you (and the rest of the world on XP) need these updates forever.

I unchecked the three updates presently listed in automatic update so they won't be bothering my systems anymore.

Perhaps it's a ruse by Microsoft to persuade XP users change to Windows 7.

There is a thread on TBB that suggests removing all .Net components and reinstalling via Windows Update fixes this.

Talk about using a sledgehammer to crack a nut  :D

More on the subject here

Seeing these being offered up tonight on a Server 2003 and on XP on unmanaged,  or Automatic updates enabled machines.

Hang loose until someone in Redmond wakes up and fixes Microsoft update.

It is reported that it will be fixed sometime after 10 a.m pacific.  It appears that MS12-035 will be rereleased and this is what is causing our momentary blip in detection.

Edit:  Now fixed, and the Microsoft securty bulletin alert indicates that some of these updates got a detection change.
