Billion 7800N vs Belkin 1500
« on: June 16, 2012, 05:47:23 PM »

In my latest attempt to squeeze a little more speed out of my long line connection I bought a Billion 7800N to replace my (basic) Belkin 1500.
First surprise was connection speed.
I had been syncing at between 2150 - 2240 at SNRM of about 9 on the Belkin.
I am now syncing more slowly at 1856 on the Billion!!

Second surprise was the much touted 'Impulse Noise Protection' feature. This is supposed to '....deliver a ten-fold improvement in noise resilience against impulse noise and delivers a reduction in bit error rates'.
As soon as I switch it on the  DSL connection stops.
To get DSL to connect again I had to restore back to factory settings and then reconfigure. I tried this twice to confirm that it was the INP that causes this.

I'm a bit disapointed given all the positive feedback I've read regarding this modem/router

EDIT. I have just noticed the the Billion is report attenuation at 63.5 whereas the Belkin reported it as 57. I am very confused now

I think I'll wait a while before trying the famous SNRM tweaking function

As far as I know, INP depends on having a Broadcom DSLAM/MSAN at the other end of the line, and its being configured to use INP. Presumably the one you're connected to doesn't have INP.

There's a lot of enthusiasm for the 7800N, but that doesn't mean that it's always the best router for a particular situation. It can usually be relied on to do a good job, but it looks as though you're the unfortunate user of a line which it doesn't work so well with.

I shouldn't bother about the reported attenuation. I found the same issue on my connection when I used the 7800N. I think it's probably a bug in the firmware, and it doesn't seem to affect the performance.

I guess I'm just surprised that a £30 piece of kit gave me a much better result than a £120 modem/router

Just putting nose in! :D
So not recommended for Infineon MSANs then?

I don't think it's that simple. Most users seem to find that it works well, whatever the brand of the DSLAM/MSAN at the other end. But with a Broadcom MSAN there are some extra performance features possible, although it's not proven that they confer much benefit in practice.

Most routers actually have phyRe built in, its just not as easy to access as on the 7800N. The 7800N's chip (BCM6358) is virtually identical to a D-Link DSL-2740B so the two will sync at very close (if not the same) speeds.

The 7800N does excel with its excellent WiFi range and speed and that it doesn't get very hot. Most people don't think about that!

I have tried reducing the SNRM on the Billion.
I am normally at 9 on the Belkin.
If I reduce it to 6 I can get up to 2016.
If I reduce it to 3 I can get up to nearly 2200 - which is what I get on the Belkin at SNRM 9!!!

So purely for throughput the Belkin is a better deal for me.

I do agree, however, that the wifi on the Billion is much better - stronger and faster.
So maybe I should use the Belkin as a modem, and the Billion as the router?

Yes, you can do that with the Billion, as it has an EWAN port for the purpose.

OK I'm completely confused now.
I've had the SNRM at 3 now for over 30 hrs.
No errors, no dropouts (and substantial rain at one point)

It gives me a sync of 2432. Much better than with my Belkin, but still profile of 2M. ( I understand why - would need to increase sync speed substantially to jump up to next level)
So why would Virgin set me to an SRNM of 9?

Incidentally it seems to me that I might as well go back to SNRM of 6, still get 2M, and theoretically by more stable (although, short time I know, but very stable at the moment)
