ADSL2+ regrade?
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:20:23 AM »

Hi,

I believe my line has been upgraded to 21CN and I have got an email from my ISP saying that I should contact them to request a regrade to ADSL2+. However a "regrade" sounds like a step backwards from ADSL2+. Should I contact them for a regrade, the email they sent is below.

We are pleased to advise you that your line has now been upgraded to the BT
21CN platform.

You are now able to regrade your service to the ADSL2+ frequency which
potentially offers higher speeds at no extra cost.

Should you wish to regrade to ADSL2+ you can do so by raising a ticket or by
contacting us, however please remember that you will need an ADSL2+
compatible router.

This is the normal procedure for a BT ADSL2+ upgrade. First the exchange is upgraded, then your line is enabled for ADSL2+ but you remain on an ADSL Max. Finally, you can upgrade your service to ADSL2+ if you wish. That's the stage you've reached. I imagine that they call it a regrade rather than an upgrade because it's just a shift to a different service; in most cases it will give you an improvement in speed, but not in all cases. If your current connection speed is in the region of 5 Mbps or less, you may not see any improvement.

Ok thanks, I am sending them a email now to get upgraded. Hopefully I should see an increase as my current line speed is around 6.5Mbps to 7Mbps.

Good luck with it. I was upgraded earlier this year and it's been very worthwhile for me - downstream has gone from ~6 Mbps to ~8 Mbps, and upstream from 448 kbps to ~1.1 Mbps.

Its worth switching to ADSL2+ simply for upstream, even if the d/s doesn't benefit. Especially if anyone in the house uses webcams etc.
