Doing the job once and doing it correctly
« on: June 01, 2012, 10:03:23 AM »

Gentlefolk,

The following article demonstrates some of the shortcomings of:-

Fibre to the cabinet is one of the biggest mistakes humanity has made.
(Former BT CTO Peter Cochrane as part of his evidence to the House of Lords Communications Committee)

http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/networking/2012/05/31/bt-kills-off-chelsea-fibre-in-clash-over-ugly-cabinets-40155320/?s_cid=115

Whilst :-

http://b4rn.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Intro_to_B4RN_Brochure_Issue1.0.pdf

clearly demonstrates where there's a will there's a way but which wouldn't be at all appropriate in Kensington and Chelsea.
However is it not time that the UK and particularly BDUK became far more proactive ?
In this case if ALL available duct space in the area was examined, surely there must be a way forward to provide the only practical long term solution of FTTP.
After all, this announcement has been made:-

http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/networking/2012/05/30/bts-super-fast-330mbps-fibre-landing-in-six-weeks-40155313/

so why not Just Get On With It ?

EDIT The peasants are revolting too ! It is hard to imagine a more dysfunctional (and expensive) arrangement either !
However they did start geting a still incomplete one right in mid December last year, but with the fourth (PCP 6) BT won't even say when they might begin.

BT had originally planned to install 108 fibre cabinets in the borough, covering 24,000 homes and businesses, but has now abandoned the plans after Kensington and Chelsea Council refused or shelved 96 of BT's planning applications for the cabinets.

I just love this response by BT

Quote
"The council said the cabinets weren't in keeping with the historic streetscape. Now they can have the historic broadband to match,"

The unfortunate thing is local businesses and residents will suffer.    :-X
Im pretty sure that something could be done if the council pulled their finger out.
After all what would have happened if the council had said no to the traditional green cabs or substations or power masts or whatever.
How many of us pass green cabs every day and never even notice they are there.

I bet they spent several thousand pounds objecting and debating... hey what if they spent that £ by offering to paint the cabs or stick some flower pots around them or whateva :rolls eyes:

I couldnt care less if BT wanted to stick a cab on the pavement outside my house - bring it on BT!... I'd just plant some shrubs around the back of it.

EDIT:

From: http://www.rbkc.gov.uk/newsroom/allcouncilstatements/btopenreach.aspx

Quote from: Kensington & Chelsea Council

Statement on BT Openreach

Every developer in Kensington and Chelsea must have regard to our historic streetscapes and listed buildings.  We expect developers, including utilities like BT, to work with us to find suitable solutions to ensure that our environment is protected.

BT was seeking permission for 108 cabinets, many of them in sensitive locations. It would not compromise on the number, or on the design. It would not use sites that already had unused BT equipment and it would not consider putting the equipment underground or any other method.

We regret that BT are not proceeding with superfast broadband in the Royal Borough but virtually the whole borough is already covered by superfast broadband with Virgin, who obviously appreciate the very valuable market the borough represents.

Virgin have been able to do this without ruining our historic streetscape. They will also consider extending to the few streets they do not already cover in the borough if demand is there.

Just imagine if BT made an advert like this:

"BT Infinity is 8x faster than the UK's average broadband speeds and it is rolling out up and down the country*.

*Unless you live in Chelsea and Kensington, as apparently our cabinets aren't nice enough.

Infinity, only from BT.

@ Asbokid,

Given that the lucky residents have Virgin Media facilities available now, one might ask the question as to who would want an inferior, limited, non-coaxial solution at some time in the future ?

Kind regards,
Walter

I would definitely want a throttled, congested service (in many areas).
