Packet Loss.
« on: November 21, 2007, 01:00:32 AM »

Hi,
I am a long suffering AOL member, and have masochistically stayed with them for some years.   I was wondering if anyone could explain to me why, when I do a "Trace Route", the third hop constantly, ( and this has gone on for years), shows a 90 to 100% packet loss?  The IP address is  195.93.17.222, which expands to - iptfarmlg-los-ve3.proxy.aol.com
Does this packet loss have  "logjam" effect on the speed,  or is this acceptable?

I would be extremely grateful for any replies, but please couch them in laymans language as techy talk baffles me.

 Thank You.

Harry.

It will be an overloaded router - or in your case a busy/overloaded proxy server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server).

In general if the hops after the proxy are fine then there isn't a problem.

I'm not one of these people who subscribes to the "ICMP priority set low" explanation as if your server/proxy is that busy then ICMP should be turned off completely.

As rizla says.

Not really too much of a problem as long as it doesn affect the hops afterwards.

so for eg

hop 1 - 1ms 1ms 1ms Router
hop2 30ms 30ms 30ms ISP Gateway
hop3 100ms 100ms 100ms proxy
hop4 30ms 30ms 30ms PeerPoint
hop5 32ms 32ms 32ms Website

would be fine.

however if all the afterwards hops were 100ms+ then it is causing a bottle neck for your traffic.
