« on: May 17, 2012, 01:28:35 PM »

hello everybody hope someone can explain or even help me. I am with talk talk and before i took out the intenet i did a test from verious compa ies on line speed and was told the lowest i would get was 2.5mb i am not connected on fibre optics as it isnt available where i live but i have the talk talk plus package here is some info from my router. I do live over 2.5miles away from exchange

Just out of interest is that line noisy?  I'd expect your attenuation figures to stay about the same..  and the upstream atten should be less than the downstream.
Something quick to try is the quiet line test
(Dial 17070 and select option 2)

i have dialled that number from my house phone and it doesnt let me have an option 2 i have read you can not do this on talktalk. i have the cable in the test line and its improved speed by 1mb i am now getting 2.2 instead of 1.2 and ping tests have come up tops just download speed is a big let down if i could hit 5mb i would be happy just thought there might be something that could be done

suggests your internal wiring is not ideal....try here:-

Im still concerned about the fluctuation in attenuation.  Normally this would be a line fault or internal wiring...
If the 2nd set of results was taken from the master socket, you wouldnt expect the attenuation to increase.

Even so with an attenuation of 37dB, Id be expecting to see much higher speeds than 1500 - 2500 kbps.

Is it possible to provide some line stats immediately after a resync..  that way we can perhaps get a good idea of your SNRM.

@naheed

Are you using a plug-in telephone extension lead such as those sold in DIY stores ?

These can affect connection speeds and attenuation.

stats for  router. I have now reconnected the wire through normal master socket and removed the bell wire and stats are like this will test in testline again tomorrow. I changed the mode to adsl2+ from adsl thats all the changes and now if someone notices something that isnt right then please let me know if i can get faster speeds than what i have a chieved already. Thank You for your help guys

Thanks for those...  but the upstream atten still looks wrong. :(

naheed - which router is it please?

anyone else - anyone know which routers (if any) reverse the down/up atten figures?
Im beginning to wonder about the possibility of a reverse set of attenuations and that is a very long line.  Seems weird that the upstream is about double the down.

>> SNR Margin(dB) 8.3  11.7

Doesnt look like a valid SNRM from startup of the router - I notice theres some FEC's showing (RS Correctables) which would also indicate that the router may have been up for a while.

naheed.  Can you put your details into the adsl checker please, out of curiosity, I'd like to see the results are returned for the BT Line speed Estimation.

ie what it says for
Fixed ADSL:
DSL Max:
21CN WBC :

It would also be useful if you could let us know what it says for line length

Distance:-    Direct:
     (appx)*    By Road:

-----

Some observation notes:-

Even if those atten figures are reversed it doesnt explain the 44dB atten in the 1st set.
Although seeing FEC's, not seeing any CRCs/HECs or other more serious errors - which would indicate from snapshots so far doesnt seem to be showing any obvious noise bursts.
Upstream limited to circa 500 kbps

I seem to recollect that my Netgear DG834Gv5 would display one pair of values the "wrong way round" when it was interrogated via the CLI. From the GUI, the values were displayed correctly. When Routerstats was used with it, the data collected and graphs so plotted were correct. So I assume that Rs corrected for that firmware phoo-bah.

:hmm:  Hmm . . . Looking at the latest SNRM values (SNR Margin(dB) 10.6  11.5), it's difficult to decide if the target margin is set to 9 or 12 dB. I suspect the latter.  :-\

think kitz was right, those attenuation figures DO look like they're reversed...the "normal" proportion is all wrong...60down/37 up would be far more like "normal".....this would also explain the max sync being around 2.5 meg, and also inkeeping with the availability checker data.

I can confirm that the Dlink DSL-2780, as supplied by TalkTalk, does indeed reverse the stats!  They trialled a beta update for this modem recently that corrected that problem  ;D

As I recall, the stats that are on the front page screen are the right way around

That is, go here http://192.168.1.1/, log in, and click the 2nd green circle "DSL (synch)".  You may need to click it twice or three times, there's another bug  :D

There you'll see the stats, which if you compare to current stats from your other source, you'll see some of the up/down figures are reversed.  Pretty sure (95%!) that the stats from that green button are the correct way round.
