The BBC said.
Linus Torvalds, the founder of Linux, has been nominated for the Millennium Technology Prize - Europe's most prestigious science and technology award.
The Linux operating system is famous for being open source which means technical details are accessible to all and can be changed and copied.
It is part of the open-ethos of the internet that many think is precious and worth preserving.
Mr Torvalds spoke to the BBC about the award and what he has achieved.

Very much deserved. I wonder what Richard Stallman thinks about it.
