How locked down is Technicolor TG582N?
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:44:15 PM »

IIRC there was much adverse comment on the TG585 v7/8's lack of configurablity  in comparison with earlier versions. The 582N appears to be the new favourite general issue of ISPs, so is it locked down just as much as its two immediate predecessors?

Also, how without an external aerial can it have good range?

I ask out of curiosity more than immediate need. ;)

I don't know the answer to the question, but my guess is that it will be just as locked down as its predecessors, because the manufacturer sells through ISPs, not directly through the retail trade.

Regarding the aerial, it will have some kind of aerial inside the box, quite probably one that's printed on the circuit board. This can work very well - for example, the 2-wire 2700HG-V has no external aerial, but had very good wireless performance.

But not only to ISPs, as it's on Amazon with somewhat mixed customer reviews.

Thanks for opinion. :)

The modem works extremely well. I personally find the Ceramic Arials give good coverage across 2 floors and out to the back yard.

As for being locked down, in what way do you mean? There are a lot of commands that can be used via the CLI and I do believe Kitz has them listed somewhere on the site.

Immediately to mind is that the v7 DMT could not be tweaked, and there may have been other restrictions to functionality as well.

The v7 was an issue and was replaced shortly after by the v8. The v8 was using an Infineon Chipset however the new TG582N uses a New design Broadcom, hence I was asking.
