According to the recent BT Press Release the Deddington exchange (Oxfordshire) "is a small rural exchange serving approximately 1,400 lines and so is the ideal size for the pilot."

I, for one, will be interested to read how the total removal of all metallic path components in the local loop progresses.

I'll be interested too, but it would be more interesting to be involved. :)

...and the interesting consequence will be that if you do not want fibre broadband speeds or cannot justify the extra cost of it but are quite happy with conventional ADSL service, then this option is no longer available to you and you will be forced to have fibre broadband.
An interesting way of extracting extra money from this sector of the local population - unless BT/ISP's start to alter their pricing models and technical aspects so that users can choose a "speed cap" on their line and pay accordingly for how high it is set.

It would be OK to be half way. They haven't finished the fibre to the cabinet yet.
Sorry but BT deserve all the criticism that they get. Now there is a money making machine if ever there was one.
Unfortunately for the OR engineers, who in the main are decent hard working guys & gals, get it in the neck for what the plonkers in the ivory towers do.

What happens now on copper lines? I have a choice of speeds/services/bandwidths at varying prices, surely if the exchange goes FTTP, which in the long run will make BT cheaper as the faults/repair staff reduce, there will still be the choice of services available?

I'll go along with that SS. Fancy becoming a member of the CWU exec ???  ;) ;D

Adrian has probably hit the nail on the head, as Fibre becomes 'the norm', tarriff structures will most likely follow suit.

It could get over complicated though.

Some users (like me) want/need high speeds for short(ish) durations - not that much in terms of volume of data transferred, some want very high speeds & massive data allowances 24/7, & some aren't too bothered about speeds, as long as they can download/upload massive amounts of data.

I agree with your analogy BE, but there is no way ISP's are going to tailor individuals lines. The time and effort (manpower) it would take, wouldn't be cost-effective IMO.
I think it will be as it is now on Copper Products. There will be various packages of 'up to' and the EU will make the decision as to what suits best.

Who knows ?? With SLU in place, a wider choice of Fibre ISP could be on the horizon, and with that 'tailoring' may be the USP of ISP's ?? Whoever dreamt up TLA's needs a kick UTA !! ;D
