Strange BT wholesale speed estimations
« on: March 27, 2012, 05:55:55 PM »

Gentlefolk,

The following is an extract from our web site.

http://www.ewhurst-broadband.org.uk/?p=2208#comments

Has anyone got an explanation as to why the VDSL checker only estimates 100 Kbps ?

We are still some way behind in Ewhurst with the delayed availability and some rather strange figures from the BT Wholesale checker. It is unclear why, when an ADSL2+ service might provide a speed of “up to” 3.5 Megabits per second, the much shorter cabinet to premises distance will only provide 100 Kilobits per second. The BT retail checker refuses to offer a FTTC service at all. If these are really genuine estimates, rather than an attempt to avoid commissioning very difficult lines, it is doubtful if anyone would be tempted to try a service from one of the other providers either. Here’s a copy of the BT Wholesale text but with the number hidden:-

For Telephone Number 0148327xxxx on Exchange CRANLEIGH

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 1.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 500Kbps and 2.5Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 2Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 500Kbps and downstream line speed of 2Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 30th June 2012. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 100Kbps and upstream line speed of 100Kbps.

Apart from the anomaly, can you really imagine anybody would have received such speeds without going into explode mode ???

Kind regards,
Walter

Could BT Wholesale just be quoting the performance of Bald_Eagle1's line?  :-\   :-X

LMAO burakkucat, maybe it's just a generalisation until the cabinet is installed???

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 39.9 Mbps and upstream line speed of 6.5 Mbps.

@ Coviad,

This statement has to be taken with a pinch of salt !

The checker often used to produce higher figures as that was the result the estimated calculator gave using the new 17a "up to 80 Mbps" profile.
I believe BT then realised that they were making false claims as there is currently a commercial cap of 40 Mbps (Except for trialists).

Kind regards,
Walter
