I had a look at it a while back (I think it was briefly discussed here) and at the time it was perhaps a bit limited. But now you've reminded me about it, it seems to have matured quite a lot now and I'm going to use it as my default search engine for a bit to see how it goes.

As Google steadily becomes more and more invasive, there's plenty of reason to look at alternatives, and duckduckgo looks like one of the better ones.

Yes, it is a good project, free and community supported. The search results are very fast and relevant and best of all you have an easy to use settings/config menu (bottom right of page in Opera) where you can even change the colour settings. It is a simple click and save to add DDG to your search toolbar too.
No adverts ( though they may appear), no tracking of any kind and a much cleaner, clearer results screen with the added option of WOT ratings without the need for the WOT toolbar running on your browser.

For family use the default SAFE setting appears much more stringent and searches for expletives and suggestive terms flag up a no results notice, where as Google still offers results that are unsavoury.

Another excellent alternative is  https://ixquick.com  which is configurable and has a very strong privacy policy.
