Virus Total web site
« on: November 10, 2007, 10:42:48 AM »

I have been tryin to make sure my laptop is free from any virii, malware etc so i've been running every kind of check i can

i've used all Kitz links from her security section as knowing Kitz i can trust these to be reputable
looking around the net i see that some sites offering to clean your pc are the ones that are actually infecting it

Can i ask what are peoples opinions on the site www.virustotal.com
Ive used this site to check a couple of specific files and the results come back with 30% saying that the file is a trojan proxy horst

is this information to be trusted and is the file only a threat if i acutally execute it (its an .exe file)

cheers
Lis

Does the service tell you which anti-virus engines are flagging it as a trojan? I've had a look at the list of AV engines they use and while some of them I would use, some I wouldn't let into the house, never mind on my machine :)

Eg - if symantec and macafee are saying its a trojan and the rest aren't I wouldn't be concerned. If on the other hand sophos is saying its a trojan then I'd be a bit more concerned.

I'd call that a false alarm. What is the filename and where did it come from (if you know)?

At first glance I'd be inclined to agree...

but is it anything to do with a keygen which some scanners seem to pick up and some dont?

To answer that question, yes.. that's true. If you're not sure and aren't totally happy with it being there, just rename the extension to something else that windows doesn't recognise like .suspiciousexe or something

Kitz - it is a keygen...

runs off to take cover in case nice people here disapprove  :-[

i have already used it and since then have run AVG, S&D, Ad-ware and housecall

still reluctant to get rid of it unless its a real threat

If it's a keygen that works for you then don't worry about it. ;)

i can live with risking my machine, just worried about this particular file as a work colleague has asked for a copy of it, dont really want to hurt their computer   :-\
