I ALWAYS remove any Java application and unstall a fresh copy, this was advised by Oracle themselves. I experienced big problems some time ago with a system I just upgraded on and have never done it since.
As to the Java applet issue, I have not seen it at all, Win7 64Bit and Opera has not shown a hint of a problem.

Many thanks, and to puddykat too  ;D

Purr!

Please remember, Smum, what you download is compressed to save time / bandwidth. When you actually perform the install, it is then decompressed / expanded back to its original size.

Like Adrian, I also ensure that the old package is removed at new package install time.

Thank you AdrianH.  I followed your advice and JRE 6.31 now works with Opera.  Once again I can view the lovely Java applet on www.thewoodheadsite.org.uk

It's a bit off that the update procedure offered by Oracle is flawed.

It happens with a lot of incremental updates. Flash is another one that really does need a clean install, Adobe provide and recommend an uninstall script for that. Even Opera I prefer to back up and install a new copy.

Yes, the AdrianH route has solved the problem for me as well.

Thank you, AdrianH  :)
