Is therea published cabinet upgrade plan?
« on: February 18, 2012, 07:50:13 PM »

My exchange (Welwyn) is scheduled for Infinity in March 2012.  While I would love to get excited - I'm aware that the village I live in is still dependent of being upgraded too and this might be some time after the exchange starts cooking on gas so to speak.

After a significant cable break recently, Openreach dug up the roads into the village and spent a week putting new cable - I would have hoped they might have done the business with regards the FTTC in prep for March - but knowing how big business works I realise this might not have occurred.

Any idea if such a "post-exchange upgrade map" exists?

Thanks

There is nothing in the public domain, as far as I know.

If you would be prepared to let me know your postcode (via a PM), I will look it up in the latest version of the "Postcode to PCP" document that I possess and determine though which PCP your line is connected. Knowing the PCP, you can then keep it under surveillance for the work required to install its FTTC twin.

There is some good news.  :)

One hundred percent of the lines for your postcode are connected via PCP12. For what it's worth, the cabinet is due to have the work performed in "Phase 7a".

The document also indicates, for marketing purposes, that the average user will see around a fifteen-fold increase in DS sync speed.

Hi St Kilda,

BKK has no doubt given you the good news as far as BT announce these things.

There are a few caveats. Depending upon the size of your PCP green cabinet BT will select either a small cabinet or a large one. Those we've observed to date they either have one set of 100 pr cables or two giving the maximum service capacity of 100 or 200 lines. However BT never (as far as I'm aware) provide services for every line in the cabinet as that would not make economic sense. There are still many houses that retain two lines from the days of fax machines & dial-up modems.

Experience suggests it is unwise to rely on delivery dates too closely. You might be interested to read some of the notes here:-

Hi guys.

Just on this...how many cabinets typically run off an exchange? i.e do cabinets serve 20 odd houses are we talking more likes the 100's / 1000's?

Is there anyway of finding out which cabinet i'm served from?

I ask as our exchange (newcastle west midlands) has a targetted FTTC rollout of September this year.

Cheers,

Jon

If you would be prepared to send me a PM containing your postcode, I will see what I can find out.  ;)

The ammount of Cabinets served by a particular Telephone Exchange, depends purely and simply on the size of the Exchange area, ie- the ammount of End Users (EU's) properties.

For example, I have an Exchange near me that has only 3 Cabinets, and another that has 125. On average, in an A-typical urban patch, a Cabinet will support approx 600 EU's, but can range from having just a single 100-pr strip to having 7 or 8, 200-pr strips. It really does depend on how the Cable Planners have utilised the network and population density. :)

@ BS,

Perhaps you could kindly confirm also:-

Tiny rural exchanges sometimes have lines connected directly to properties without any PCP green cabinets.
Many urban exchanges also have some adjacent properties connected without a PCP.

Kind regards,
Walter

100% correct Walt. These are referred to as 'DEL's' ......... Direct Exchange Lines. :)
