La Belle France blanche causing bird bath problem !
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:06:08 AM »

:o :o   Snow  not going anywhere  .... minus 9 overnight and  minus 7 at the moment  :swoon:   I'm a WUSS with a capital W when it comes to snow, hate it   >:(

Is there any way to stop our bird bath freezing up ....  it is SOLID !   I've emptied  umpteen boiling kettles into it, then refilled, but it's futile !   Does anyone have any ideas ? ....we are supplying seed by the kilo and boules de graisse  by the dozens but water is a problem.

Scotty completely phased by all this white stuff   :D

Hope everyone over these is OK  ...  keep warm and safe!  :)

You could try filling it up with Grand Marnier..at least the orange part will do them good  :D

 ;D

It's a good bit colder where you are than where I am, Kate, which is a bit unusual. :)   I recommend porridge for breakfast and suet pudding for dinner.

There's nothing much you can do to stop water freezing when it's so cold unfortunately. I keep a couple of old casserole lids for bird drinking, and I swap them over when one freezes, filling the fresh one with warm water. But they're not so elegant as a proper bird bath. :)

 ;D

I'll make sure I have a large glug of Grand Marnier before  serving the birds with porridge and suet pudding  :D   They do say that 'moving' water doesn't freeze   it does !!

Poor you Kate with the freeze and poor birds too  :(  Always difficult to give them water in temps like that but came across a couple of tips though not sure it will help any.

Place a light ball in the water which can be moved by the breeze or wind and may keep a small amount of water free from ice.

Use a polythene sheet to line the bath so that you can lift out along with the ice. (That is assuming of course that it doesn't freeze immediately after refilling...)

Hope you (or the birds) don't have to endure the conditions for too long, would hate to think of you and Scottie with icicles on your noses  ;D

Thanks for that Chrissie  :) ....  I think all efforts will be futile at the moment because it really is so cold, (it hasn't  been above -5 all afternoon, and now the sun has vanished I expect it will drop quite quickly) that it literally freezes after a few minutes.  :o    They'll have to skate for the moment I think  ;D   I've not tried the plastic idea, too cold,  but it might work.   I did wonder if there was something I could add to the water, but don't want to cause problems to the birds' digestion or  protective plumage.  I shall have to  leave it to mother nature for the moment and hope  that she is kind  :)

Scotty decided at nearly midnight last night that he needed to go out  ! (he'd already been out at about 10 pm) did he want to do the necessary ?  No  ....  he wanted to play ....  had a mad run around   (him not me  ;D) then came back ....  was I amused  ? No ....  :'(
