UPDATE EU and UK Officially Sign Controversial ACTA Internet Copyright Treaty

Quote
The controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), a treaty that aims to establish a broad new range of international copyright enforcement standards (e.g. such as through broadband ISPs or at airports etc.), has today been officially signed by the European Union (EU) and 22 of its Member States at Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs......(more)
Whilst the world raged against SOPA and PIPA the UK have signed up to ACTA without so much as a whimper. All done behind closed doors and without consultation it seems .....

I have always thought that copyright must be respected whether it is a multi-national company or an individual and the main reason such draconian laws are being proposed is the idiots who think that they can ignore copyright. Why do file sharers et al feel that they have a god given right to ignore copyright, they are the ones to blame for all this. Continue down this road and we will lose a lot of valuable and entertaining work.

I can't disagree with what Stuart says, but the process which led to this being signed without any prior public debate is truly appalling. This is yet another piece of legslation which benefits the rich and powerful media companies while potentially taking away rights from ordinary people (honest or otherwise).

I should have added that, as Eric says, this agreement is bad as all of this should be done with properly drawn up and debated legislation protecting both rights and privacy of honest law abiding people at the same time protecting properly copyrighted material whoever it belongs to.

Can't disagree with anything here , the big thing is that they have bypassed the "legislation" system by making this a "trade agreement" not a law.
