Small White Box with BT Logo After Master Socket?
« on: January 11, 2012, 06:48:52 PM »

I have a small white box after my master socket with a BT logo on it. It seems that the extension wiring goes into the box and then it goes from there to the master socket. My question is: what is this box and do I need it?

It looks like a BT77A/B or BT78A or BT80A - see the pictures near the bottom of this page: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btsockets.htm

A look inside should identify it.

A router syncs faster and at a higher SNR margin when connected to a filtered NTE5 without it connected so I wonder if it could be creating interference?

Well it's a simple junction box, that's all.
It has (as is common) the bell wire linked, which "may" be affecting your broadband.

Where is your router plugged in? And what sort of filter is it?

The bell wire is disconnected from the master socket, but even with it disconnected the line still syncs lower and at a lowe SNR margin than if I disconnect the extension wiring from the master socket.

The master socket is an NTE5 with a filtered ADSLNation faceplate attatched to it.

Where is your router plugged in?
It may also help to disconnect the bell wire in any & all extension sockets.

It appears that it wasn't the junction box causing the problem at all, it was an ADSL cable. After trying another ADSL cable and then using the original cable it was clear that the connection was far less and stable and more errors were being produced on the faulty cable: it was a shielded cable from ADSLNation. I am surprised that it is faulty!

Anyway, thanks for all your help.

I have another question: do I need this box and can I remove it?

Hi ARobertson,

You can adjust all wiring components provided they are after the BT master socket.
If you no longer need the remote connection then you may remove whatever you wish.

Kind regards,
Walter

What do you mean by "remote connection"? Would it make any difference removing it?

The remote connection is the equipment downstream of the connector box which will not then be connected unless you re-wire it with new cabling from the master socket.

Kind regards,
Walter
