FTTC - Unlocked Modem data on long line
« on: January 10, 2012, 02:16:42 AM »

Hi all,

New on here but have been lurking and following the sagas of certain members in getting decent FTTC speeds for a couple of months.

My install was at the beginning of December with Plusnet as my ISP. Had my ADSL with them and on the line I was barely getting 1.7mb as I was 4.51km from the exchange as the crow flies with the real line length probably a bit longer than that. My speed estimate was 7mb and from all that I had read that seemed optimistic as I am a minimum of 2.2km from the nearest FTTC green cabinet. Undaunted I signed up for an install to see what I could get! :o

The install day came and I was stunned to be getting speedtest readings of 15mb so started trying to find out why this could be - all the time wondering if line training and DLM were going to take it all away from me as time went on... :'(

New year's eve - the modem died - no life at all - reported to Plusnet and at the same time ebayed another modem for "research" purposes - really peeved me that I couldn't see actual sync speeds. Plusnet and OR had my official modem replaced in 3 days and thankfully my speeds stayed the same.

eBay modem arrived today - a quick unlock (thank you asbokid  ;D) and I'm up and running with all the stats I could ever want, here's what I'm getting:

Now I don't know what that all means but hopefully it provides some data on a longer line than seems to be the norm for FTTC installs.  8) I still don't fully understand why the speeds are so good as all the graphs I've seen indicate that with this line length I should be getting very poor speeds although I think I've always been on 17a rather than 8c whic might be part of it.

I'll have a look at some of the graphing tools next once I've updated Ubuntu on an old laptop. ::)

Welcome Step_7,

With a FTTC service provided by PlusNet and on a relatively long line, I suspect that Mr Eagle will be casting his beady-eye over your line's data. Expect lots of questions, suggestions and discussions on various aspects of your connection!  ;)

Hi Step_7, & welcome to the Kitz forum.

Hi all,

You do indeed appear to be doing very well on a 2200m D-side line length.

The most useful commands to run are:-

xdslcmd info --pbParams
xdslcmd info --linediag
xdslcmd info --bits
xdslcmd info --show
xdslcmd info --stats

If those were run one after the other, & ideally saved into a single log file using PuTTy terminal, you would have all the relevant stats to graph a snapshot of your connection at any given time.

You could do this using the Linux script already available publicly, or I could let you have copies of my Windows only batch files that have some automation built in.

I have attached a snapshot example of my connection as the first graph set shown below.

If you wished to automatically monitor your connection's stats over time, including Sync speeds, SNRM fluctuations, error counts etc. I could let you have copies of Windows only batch files that would do this for you.

An example of my connection's latest 24 hours ongoing stats is attached as the second graph set shown below.

The third graph set shows my connection's stats over 40 days.

burakkucat is correct. As my service is also provided by Plusnet, I may well mither you to death regarding your connection's stats & performance.  ;D

Let's hope you are able to continue to achieve better performance than your original estimated speeds.

We tend to prefer speedtest.net for the most consistent speed test results:-

Paul.

Cheers for the welcome - Baldeagle, your "mega post" is what brought me here, via google, in the first place when I was trying to find out about line length and its relationship to speed. Read the whole thing one nightshift in work! ;)

Here's the results from my latest speed test -

And one from my iPhone 15 minutes after install!

I've lost a bit on upload during training but I can live with that all things considered.
