Speed checking website problems
« on: October 31, 2007, 04:01:55 PM »

I'm with Metronet and generally use their proxy server (for filtering, faster web pages etc). There have been occasions in the past when the server has gone on a 'go slow', indicated by slow web page loading and in particular with a speed test (should be quicker via proxy).
In the last couple of days I've reported a go-slow problem via the MN/PN forum.
However, it turns out that some web speed measuring pages are giving the wrong results.
Both the PlusNet one http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and the BBMax one http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ give very low results when using the proxy. In fact the PN test page times out and wont open when the proxy is off. These 2 seem to use similar 'engines'.
NB. checked on Firefox & IE, same results.
Thinkbroadband http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html gives what appear to be correct results, checked by downloading a test file.

Any ideas about this anyone, is it the latest version of Java messing it up .....?
Terry.

What proxy are you referring to? As far as I am aware the Metronet proxy that they ran prior to being bought by Plusnet is dead and gone - well the way it operated certainly is.

I joined Metronet 8 days before Plusnet bought them. What a "Doh!" moment that was :D

No, The MN proxy is alive and well (most of the time) and they seem keen to keep it maintained.
I was involved in someone else going with MN just a few months ago and the proxy was set up with their account too.
It's proxy.metronet.co.uk - port 80

Errm I would be willing to bet cash that the Metronet proxy is not the same as it was when Metronet were an independent company.

Really.

Maybe, but what about the speed test web sites, 2 don't work properly and one does?

PN liked the proxy idea and apparently injected more cash into it, I believe its also available for PN users too if they wish to use it.

As regards to the different speed thingy.
I dont know for sure, but what may well have something to do with it - is afaik that both the PN tester and the BBMax one use port 80.

The AG speed tester uses port 8095 - although you can force it to use port 80 by ticking the check box.

Why it should be slower for http traffic though I dont know - if anything youd expect non-standard ports to perform slower than http traffic. ???
