Did you bid £3000 ?.  :'(

No, not I.   I wonder if it was Asbokid::)

Snarf snarf!

Not sure the RaspberryPi is such a good board, due to the nature of its partially closed-source SDK.

The Loongson MIPS development boards look nice..[1]  They can run x86 code in hardware emulation as well.

Or maybe recycle an ebayed MIPS- or ARM- based router, and start hacking away for just 99p!

There's quite a good article about it in the April issue of Linux Format magazine.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/#foundation

So heavy, it crashed their site and it has been offline all day since.  Ordering is through Farnell or RS Components, the former's website has also suffered all day whereas RS seem to have been ready and handled the load.

The smallish batch of 10,000 was sold out in half an hour and now they are asking potential buyers to register interest before the next batch arrives.  The RPi foundation is now licensing the design to Farnell and RS who will both no doubt have the "clout" to order up bigger batch sizes.

I managed to get my order in during the first 10 minutes - limited to one per customer.  Can't wait to start playing and putting together a few "projects" I have in mind.

It should outperform the Arduino but you may have to adopt Linux to use it. I bet Microsoft are not best pleased!

Despite my initial enthusiasm I confess I'm up to my neck in other stuff right now, so I'll not be joining the chase for early specimens.

I still think it's an incredible device, and look forwards to hearing what folks manage to do with them.

I'm not sure what I will do with one but they certainly have aroused feline curiosity.  :-\

Indeed, well done Colin.

'Lucky' would seem to be the word.  Maybe this should be your week to buy a lottery ticket and see what happens?  :D

Now waiting for Parcelforce/DHL to arrive!

Lottery tickets - akin to throwing the pound coin out of a moving car and expecting it to come back in accompanied my millions more!  I can't remember the odds, but they are phenomenal.

For RS at least, I think nowadays you can 'just pay', you don't have to open a business account.

That said, I opened a business account sometime ago when i was prototyping a small device and making frequent orders.  No questions were asked at all, no proof of trading was required,  and I still benefit from it a decade later.  Biggest benefit is free next day courier on everything you buy, no matter how small.   I sometimes feel almost guilty... ordering (say) a single SATA cable at a couple of quid, and RS bear the cost of courier.   ;)

edit: Clarified my comments apply to RS
