Looking for a new modem router
« on: December 10, 2011, 08:04:41 PM »

I'm looking for something with a bit more oomph to replace my current Netgear DG1000.
I have it on the window sill of the front bedroom where there is a secondary phone point, but
I use my laptop downstairs in the lounge directly beneath the router. My desktop is at the other
end of the house in a spare bedroom. Needless to say I use wireless connections on both.

The signal strength on the router fluctuates quite widely on both, but especially the laptop downstairs.

For that reason I have an Edimax access point in the spare front bedroom, next to the main bedroom,
which does improve the signal and is more stable than the router's signal.

Does any one please have any suggestions as to what modem router would be better than the Netgear?

I could then move the Edimax to the back of the house & have the desktop on a cable to it

Thanks

Look at the Billion 7800N which gives amazing results and can be tweaked, it has a Broadcom Chip which makes a huge difference to connection speeds.

This blog explains all you need to know >> http://www.spaldwick.com/billion-7800n.

I am on ADSL2+ LLU and could never get a stable line synching above @11.8 meg as the noise is bad at night here. My SNR was always around 10db , anything below 8db and the net stopped dead.

I am now running at 16.85 meg with an SNR of 6 db and this can drop to 2db without any ill affect or line drop using the Billion 7800 and tweaking the settings.

The 7800N is certainly one of the best (I use one myself). If it's a bit too expensive for you, you might consider its young sibling, the 7700N. The latter is basically the same router, but the ethernet ports are only 100 Mbps, not gigabit.

Thank you both

I've just had a quick look on Amazon where the 7800 is £119, all but & the 7700 just under £49.

Not sure what my wife would say to the price of the 7800, but then again she can't really crib as she's getting a
handbag for pretty well the same exact price of the 7800. Fair swaps maybe? ;) :)

Edit
I've just found the 7800 available at broadband buyer for £81.31 ;D. Far better. I think she might wear that w/out any
grief.

The 7800 isn't a wireless router of course, but if you're using a separate access point I guess that doesn't matter.

Are you sure?
Novatech (http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/networking/wirelessnetworking/wirelessrouters/adslroutersbtline/bipac7800n.html)

Or is that a different model? Either way, at £133 it's too much

The 7800 and 7800N are two different routers. 'N' indicates the wireless-N version. The 7800 is no longer officially available for sale in the UK, but some suppliers may still have some stock.

Thanks for the clarification and, in my ignorance, an apology for doubting you.

Seems they might be changing that ? >> http://www.billion.uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=187

My wife has kindly funded a Billion 7300n on behalf of Santa. I've not tried it yet but will wait until I've been migrated fromTalkTalk to ICUK, which should be on Thursday.

Box says Billion Bipac 7300n  :)

Changeover day to ICUK tomorrow, but she's hidden the router from me so I won't get to use it for a day or 2 :(

Maybe I ought to reclaim her even more expensive handbag until Sunday ;) ;D

Are you a very brave man, or have you been sampling the Christmas spirit a little early?  :D
