Power Point Presntations
« on: October 25, 2011, 10:34:19 PM »

I have a feeling I've asked this before, if so apologies to all.

When ever my wife receives an Power Point Presentation as an attachment to her laptop after clicking 'open' she gets the following message.

This file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action.

Create an association in the Folder Options, control Panel.

I have tried several time to do this but I'm working in the dark, can anyone advise me on this please?

If she saves the PPP to her desktop, they open fine from there.

Do you mean 'her desktop computer' and not on the desktop on her laptop?

If the answer is 'yes' she/we also have a desktop computer, then the reason would probably be that you have the Power Point program installed on the desktop computer (but not on the laptop)

Power Point can also come with some versions of Microsoft Office, so you may want to check your disc's and if needs be install it on the laptop. If you don't have it you could also check the Microsoft site to see if they do a free viewer as they do for some programs.

There is a free viewer available at http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6

Hi,

I really should be more precise, sorry.

If she saves the PPP to the desktop on her laptop they open fine, she does have Power Point on her laptop.

Thanks.

Ok, in which case it should be just a case of 'Right Click' the file then select the 'Open With' option, if PP is not showing then you just need to follow the path to your installed programs folder which might be 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\...' then find the PowerPoint .exe file, once you find that then select it which will then bring you back to the original screen where you can also put a tick in the box to 'Always use this program to open this type of file' so that it always opens with PowerPoint when clicking a PowerPoint file.

Failing that, you can simply open PP from the Start/Programs folder followed by navigating to where the file is stored and selecting it.

Right clicking on the attachment on the email only shows:

Open
Print
Save As
Save All Options.

There is no 'Open With' option.

Right clicking on the attachment on the email only shows:

You say 'Attachment' is this a RAR, or Zip type attachment or literally a PP file?
What is the file extension that is shown with the attachment (mine show as .PPT)
If in the email when you see the attachment and when you click on it it should ask which program you want to use to open it.

I'm wandering if when saving the attachment to the desktop it is then being unRARed (decompressed) which is why it is then playing.

This all all we see on the email.  (See print screen attachments)

I should mention that the attachments open ok for me on my PC.

Ok so it looks like 'xxx.pps' (so not a rar or zipped file)

My only other suggestion would be to go to:

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types.

Then select 'NEW' and type pps in the first box, then in the same open page followed by 'Advanced' and selecting Power Point as the 'Associated File Type'

Then when you ever select a .pps type file it will always open with Power Point regardless of where it is.

I'm at a loss as to what to suggest next.

One other thought is to double check and make sure PowerPoint is actually installed on the computer and not just the alternative viewer, although I don't know if even that will help very much.

Whilst I haven't used Windows for a long time, could this be something to do with the email program?
Does the default application for *.pps need setting up for Outlook or Outlook Express?
Just a thought.

Obviously all thoughts are better than none at all, and who knows just one thought might just shed some light onto the problem.

But there is no need for any extra settings to enable attachments to work, all that is required is that the appropriate program is installed, which in this case is PowerPoint.
Not that it probably makes any difference either probably just down to being a different version of MS Office but my PowerPoint files show with the extension of .ppt.

The attachment will not play directly from the email program but will play when moved to the desktop, very strange to say the least.
'Which email program are we talking about?'

Could it be a security thing?
