BT new Beta Speed test
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:07:50 AM »

Gentlefolk,

Down in sunny Surrey we have access to a new BT beta speed test as well as the older one.
It is absolutely wonderful that you aren't yet asked stupid questions or limited to one absurd test an hour.
You see the instantaneous results flashing which vary wildly, but you only get a downstream result without the sync speed or IP Profile.

I did three Beta tests on one of our poorer lines which gave the marginally higher results 0.94, 0.94, 0.92 and the standard test gave:-
913 Kbps, DSL Connection rate 1376 Kbps down, 448 Kbps up, IP Profile 1213 Kbps
TBB speed test gave 865.41 Kbps down and 349.67 Kbps up.

Incidentally the standard BT test no longer shows the IP with the phone number confirmation although "waiting for 217.32.105.42" is shown in the bottom of the browser window.

EDIT I've just done a VERY NAUGHTY thing ! I used the new BT beta tester to test my Virgin Media 100 Mbps service.
To be fair BT did state "This Site can be used to complete a download speed test on broadband lines however the accuracy of the results are not guaranteed for lines running above 40Mbps." which I assume means they recognise that there are services available above 40 Mbps ?? Although I saw figures well in excess of 100 Mbps flash before me the end result is obviously much too low as shown below.

Kind regards,
Walter

Now why do I get the feeling that the simplification is not just for simplification's sake?

More info might be of good use to the EU, but also a b. nuisance to BT Obfuscation Ltd? ::)

It gave 15.02mbps on my Be line.

Reasonable as the current sync is just below 19mbps and I'm in the middle of downloading nearly 5GB from Microsoft (W8).  :-X

On my O2 connect it reported a whopping 2.56mb  ;D

Speedtest.net has just thrown up 2.52mb,so virtually the same. :)

It's just an ordinary speed tester, with nothing to distinguish it from a dozen others. ???

@ Eric,

Except perhaps the unusual Ts & Cs?

There may also be an additional piece of cunning logic that tells me "The system is busy. Please try again later." if I attempt a second test immediately after I have recorded the first results. The lock seems to be removed after perhaps 10 minutes.

Kind regards,
Walter

Usually Sky, TT,O2 are LLU which don't use IP profiles.
