If the digits are a and b, then the number is 10a + b.
The calculation is then 10a + b - (a + b) which equals 9a.

The final screen is arranged so that every 9th symbol is the same, and that's the one which must be the answer.

It's a novel presentation, I must admit.

The way the calculation is done, the result is always a multiple of 9. (In fact it's 9 x the first digit of the 2-digit number). So in the final screen every 9th symbol is the same, and that's the symbol which is displayed at the end. It's also the symbol you will be looking at if you did the arithmetic right.
