Title: Internet Problem
Post by: UncleUB on March 04, 2011, 07:47:28 AM
Hi all

When I tried to connect to any browser this morning none would load.I restarted my pc and got onto Firefox. But now many sites won't load, the site address is coming up in the address bar,but the site isn't loading

I have tried with Chrome and the same problem.

This sounds like a DNS problem. To check this, when you find a site which won't load, open a command line window and type 'ping' followed by the address, e.g.
Code: [Select]
ping bbc.co.uk
(I'm not familiar with the Windows implementation of ping, so you may need to type Ctrl+C to stop the ping command running.)

The ping command should come back with the IP address of the site (e.g. 1.2.3.4) but if it doesn't then you do have a DNS problem.

UnkyUb, further to the above, to do a ping test in Windows go start>run and when that opens type in cmd and hit ok.

A window looking like the image under will open, in there and starting from where there will be a flashing cursor, type in as per roseway's code and then hit the enter key.
The test will run and detail of the several hops etc will be listed in that window.

In Windows, no need to stop the command line running as such......when you have your info. just click the little X in top right hand corner.

I had the same problem this morning with Opera and Firefox on my Linux machine. I think it is DNS problems somewhere along the route. It has cleared up now.

Thanks guys. :)

Sorry for not replying sooner, just returned from shops. :)

All seems ok now. :fingers:

This has happened once before, a few weeks back..Just a thought, I have been using Chrome a lot the last few weeks.I  never had this problem before I started using Chrome.  :shrug2:

Could this be something to do with Google DNS ?

I haven't changed any settings/downloaded anything(other than windows updates,flash,Java etc)recently

I'm not certain but I think HP Sauce is with BE,which might be why all 3 of us have been affected.?

Hi UncleUB  :)

Are you using GoogleDNS ?

Only...

I've experienced exactly the same problem a couple of times in the last week  :(

Started : Last Tuesday Night ... Rebooted Router ... Back To Normal!
Few Days Later : Same Thing ... Rebooted Router ... Back To Normal!
Wednesday Morning : Same Again  >:( Rebooted Router ... Back To Normal!

Seems OK at the minute!
Don't really want to change back to AOL DNS / Talk Talk DNS as they are really bad.
And I didn't like Open DNS... Seemed much slower than Googles.
Google DNS has served me well up to now... Pray that isn't about to change  :-\

I am.
It was a fault in an external interconnect suppliers network apparently. The rumours suggest Level 3.

@Zoe and all - you can run a simple test on your own and other DNS servers speeds with this: http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm  (http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm)

It doesn't install anything - you just download an .exe file and run it. It creates a file or two of log and configuration data.
You can compare your existing DNS with others, and also put other possible DNS into a list and compare all.

Cheers,
Peter

Just out of interest what is the best thing to do if this happens again.

I just restarted the computer which in this instance didn't fully work.

Is it better to reboot the router

You can always restart the computer of course, because it doesn't cost anything apart from a minute of your time. In some cases it might fix the problem. After that, a router reboot might help. If the problem still exists, then turn off the router and leave it off for half an hour - whatever caused the problem might have left you with a stale session, and a bit of unconnected time would clear this.

But these are only general suggestions, because there isn't really any one best way to deal with every internet problem.

Thanks Eric  :)

Will remember your advice if it happens again.

I don't think the problem on this occasion was with o2's DNS because the pages I visited would load part of the way then hang waiting for something else to load. In other words an advert or image. Like Eric says it doesn't hurt to reboot it all, not like we are on IP profile connection.  :)

The first time it happened to me none of the browsers installed on my desk top would load any websites. On re starting my computer all was well.

The second time(yesterday) none of my browsers(FF,Opera and Chrome) would open any web pages,on re starting the pc my homepage loaded(BBC.co.uk) even though a little slowly, but many sites would not load at all.

I then restarted my pc but went out to do some shopping,on my return about an hour later I came to the pc,opened FF and all was well.

As you say Colin, being on LLU you don't have to worry about IP profiling

Hi UncleUB  :)

When it happened to me...
Found the only way to solve the problem was to Reboot Router  ::)

My Problem!
Pages...
First:  Became slow to load.
Second: Stopped loading at all.
Guess we could have just waited to see if the problem rectified itself.
But...
Haven't got the patience for that
And...
Know my teenage son definitely hasn't got the patience to put up with it.

So hard to know why or understand what's going on, when an Internet problem suddenly starts out of the blue  ???
Openreach were swarming around my area and even in my street twice last week.
