Yeah, shame when a good site goes to pot. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kitz and DSL Zone had a good rapport between them as well.

Wonder if izools will make the leap over here ?? That geezer does know his stuff.  ???

Yes it did until James gave up on the site and failed to keep up with basic security updates, etc, resulting in me getting infected.

I've not visited for around 12 months because of this.

Its a shame because it was a good site until the security issues.

It will be back up shortly and I'll monitor it

Good news for you and I just hope James finds the time to maintain DSL Zone with security updates unlike before.

I know he's busy running ADSL24  :)

I'll pop in and say hello after postie pointed me to here. It's been many moons since I visited DSLZone but I've seen most of you posting on other BB related boards.

I finally deserted ADSL and went to cable in April last year. It's a different world with different problems and only one provider.

28 th Nov 2012,
the DSLzone forum went down finally ? about a week back . no reason given ,
but it had a lot of spam problems recently ,Milos@ admin was fighting a loosing battle alone ,

all contact with James has failed ,
so I guess it's RIP dslzone ,
anyway good to remember my Kitz  log in,  I took a chance on password LOL ,
I always wondered where you guys disappeared to,
I think I was a member of the zone from about 2007 , about the same time I registered on
TMNet forum USA  , still there as the lone Brit and getting slagged off on every off topic post I make ,
it's a cruelty free form of bear baiting ,they are so easy to wind up  :D,

I've just had a look and it's not only the forums, but the whole site appears to be offline. :-\

I can understand the problem with spammers, particularly since the bots can get around most  captchas...  Even recaptcha has been cracked, so it's a constant war trying to use a combination of various methods to try and keep them out.  :(

Crikey I would have thought that those captchas, recaptchas, etc were difficult to crack and quite an effective anti-spam measure.

Surprising that !

Yeah I would have persevered with the (annoying) password reset hassle if the changes and updates had come about if only to see what they looked like but alas it wasn't to be.

For the past few days Ive been receiving porn/viagra type spam on the email account I used to sign up dslzone with.

Its a specific email address and not used elsewhere,  that address can only have been disclosed via the dslzone server.
Has it been hacked (again)! ::)

Unfortunately not since re-captcha was cracked.
I have to use several different layers of defence. The captcha is only 1 of about 6 layers in use on these forums - and its probably the least effective. Theres still one or two manual spammers that get through, but you cant really do much about those, but touch wood they are very rare compared to the large amount that are caught by one of the other means.

The war for automated bots is constantly ongoing on both sides :(

Further to the above, thought you might like a sneak peak of an indication of spammers that could have got through this forum if I relied on just the captcha.

All the following have tried to register in the past few hours and actually got through a captcha test, but then gone on to be caught by one of the other methods I use.  So yep spamming of forums is big business :(

It wouldn't surprise me as security is not kept up to date or never used to be.

I used my o2 email address to register with DSL Zone and now you come to mention it I have been having a lot more viagra spam lately  :(

Fortunately it goes straight into my junk email folder but even so it's a nuisance.

I just had 2 more spam emails through - one from Cicily Stumpo and the other from Linocln Higonnet.

Do these (alias) names keep coming up in your spam ?

As I'm curious, I just noticed that the destination email address is nothing like mine apart from it beginning with the same letter as mine and ending in @o2.co.uk

How does this work?

I went into properties and I checked thoroughly and there was no mention of my proper email address.
Title: Re: DSL ZoneUK
Post by: kitz on December 03, 2012, 09:01:59 AM
Neither of those names particulary ring a bell, but atm Im on a mobile device which is only set up for my personal email.  There were a couple that I binned last night, TBH I didnt really look at them other than to delete them, but iirc one was for lubricants (unfortunately not the liquid type  :drink:) and the other was something like the girl looking for a male with a clicky linky type of thing, I didnt look at the name.

As regards the destination, your email address was possibly in the bcc field, it should however be visible if you view the full email headers.

captcha in my view is aweful.

bots get by it, like yourself I see its effectiveness is minimal.

But at worst it stops humans completely, I have had sites where I failed captchas 20 times in a row so give up, at best it annoys the human but they get by it.

Sadly captcha is spread like a plague so many sites use it.
