Title: Do registry cleaners really work?
Post by: oldfogy on July 20, 2006, 09:41:12 PM
Ok, I know I asked "Do registry cleaners really work?" but seriously.

I mentioned before a program called Registry Mechanic v5.
Well on my system I now have 3 types of reg cleaners.
"Norton System Works, System Mechanic and Registry Mechanic"

(Because I install and de-install programs on a regular basis and also delete lots of files manually, this amount of results are not uncommon to my system)

Out of curiosity I ran all three programs to see if there was much difference in the results each one found, and the problem area
results were:

Norton System Works = 72 (most of which were missing short cuts and removed files).

System Mechanic = 64 (most of which were missing short cuts and Low Date and Time entries).

Registry Mechanic = 45 (41 missing short cuts plus 4 others).

So I cleaned up all 72 with Norton, expecting nothing to be found when checked again, But
System Mechanic and Registry Mechanic still showed the same results when checked again.

So I cleaned with System Mechanic and
Registry Mechanic still showed the same results when checked again.

So, now I cleaned with Registry Mechanic
And the system is finally clean (again, but not for long I know).

After each clean-up the same program was run again showing "NO" problems found.

It seems strange to get a similar variety of problem areas that each different program does not recognise or clean the majority of them first time. So how many cleaners do they expect us to have?

I know. It seems each program only targeted specific types of reg entries.

Two freebies that I have found work well, use one, clean up, then try the other and the only reports are ones that the other missed.  Does that make sense?

Not all cleaners find all the errors, so worth using more than one.

Try EasyCleaner from Toni Arts, site recently moved, not sure where it is now.

And RegSeeker 1.45 from www.hoverdesk.net

Both are available from most download sites, try

http://www.majorgeeks.com/ they have almost everything worth having.

I also use Ontrack System Suite 3, but this cost around ?40 but has a very good Reg cleaner and masses of other stuff.  There is a newer version out, about which I know nothing.  Package also includes PowerDesk Pro, an explorer replacement and which is much, much better.

Ontrack were taken over by Vcom a year or so back.

There are loads of others out there but EasyCleaner & RegSeeker are as good as anything else and neither are known for causing problems.

Do please check that they support XP, if that is what you are using, I'm still sticking with 98SE for the forseeable future.  Tried W2K & hated it.  Tried Ubuntu and within 10 minutes formatted the hard disk yet again.
