Post by: not/einstein on November 05, 2010, 09:52:17 PM
i don`t know if anyone as mentioned this before but i find that an old bankers card or a credit card is ideal for terminating the wires in the IDC terminals on sockets , just push the wire all the way and cut off any surplus......................... :graduate: :)

Hi Einstein,

I would suggest just a little caution with unusual (Krone) IDC insertion tools.
The jaw width on each terminal is critical as it must be just the right size to "bight" through the wire insulation.
If you force the terminal apart it could widen the jaws so that an intermittent connection is produced.
EDIT I've attached a close up picture of the approved Krone insertion tool. You can see that the gap ensures nothing interferes with the jaws of the terminal, whereas your credit card might force the jaws apart.

Chasing intermittent problems can be the very devil to eliminate and you could end up spending a lot of effort costing far more than the price of the correct tool.

Kind regards,
Walter

If I haven't got one to hand I use a pair of thin small flat screwdrivers to push down each side (or 1 screwdriver and alternate each side in small steps) being careful to avoid the metal jaws, so that they do cut through the insulation as required.

Sometimes you just don't carry around every single tool you might need in every possible situation so have to get creative with what's available....... :P
