Gentlefolk,
Although very thankfully this fault seems to have now been cleared it is worth noting that Plusnet reported this outage at 29 October 2010 20:07:06 GMT+01:00
and that it probably lasted right through the night to 30 October 2010 07:57:02 GMT+01:00
The exchanges affected were really a quite significant number as illustrated below, but note the times vary to some extent:-

Here's the Zen announcement
http://status.zensupport.co.uk/index.php?serviceid=5&incidentid=2024&simple=1
Here's the AAISP announcement
http://status.aaisp.net.uk/?incident=628
It can only be hoped that the major provider has observed quite how much disruption must have been caused and that steps are taken to avoid similar future incidents with sufficient replacement equipment in situ.
It would be nice if more technical details were made available but I suspect that is wishful thinking.
Kind regards,
Walter

This situation affected me.......my connection went down at about 1750 hours, and I note from your list that my exchange was one of the early failures.
I don't know when service was restored as I was, by that time, in the arms of Morpheus.
OK this am when I first tried at about 0555 hours.

My apologies - I spoke too soon ! Here's another Plusnet message:-

Plusnet now report at
30 October 2010 23:07:05 GMT+01:00
that the problem has been fully resolved. There seems very little technical detail available to the public yet.
Whilst this "only" affected 20CN services it would seem that far better redundancy plans and spares should be in place as the RASes will be required for many months yet.
What with the ticket-buying fiasco as well, I very much hope serious questions are being asked e.g. for the Olympics.

Dear me, it gets worse. :(
-
Is it fixed ?
Just in case anybody is bewildered I can assure you that the 01483 Guildford Surrey area is not in Scotland or even the north of England.
I am also pleased to say that these disturbances have not affected Virgin Media broadband services in this area except possibly that some web sites seem to take a little longer to load.
Kind regards,
Walter

Subject: Broadband Connectivity Issues (64232) - UPDATE
This is an update to this afternoon's post about the major service outage that has been affecting parts of Ireland, Scotland and the North of England. In cases, these problems have been evident since before the weekend.
We have received an update from our suppliers advising us that service has now been restored. Due to a number of 'cleanup activities' that need to be carried out though, there is still a possibility that this issue is affecting your broadband service.
If you are still having problems then we suggest you try powering off your modem or router before powering it back up and attempting to reconnect.
The list of affected area codes in the latest update can be found below. Please note that we have received reports from customers with area codes not on this list that appear to be affected.
We will monitor the situation overnight and provide another update early tomorrow morning.
Apologies for the continued inconvenience.

My local exchange (01303) is on that list, and we're in Kent.
-
02380 is Southampton. What is going on with this list? It can't all be finger trouble typing can it or is there something nationwide going on? A faulty firmware update?

Forgive my cynicism, but this smacks to me of opportunism, an excuse to blame all the ills of the world on some possibly unrelated event.
My own dialling code (South of England) is include in the latest list, but I'm at home these days, using the net frequently, and have seen no disruption
Please note that we have received reports from customers with area codes not on this list that appear to be affected
In that case, why does he think it's the same problem?
-
I've just checked and my area code is also on the list. I have seen no interruption in the last 7 days.
-
I've racked my brains, and checked all the codes I've ever lived, they're all listed. I checked the codes of friends and distant relatives, they are all there too. :-X
-
It would appear the list is purely a list of codes. Not necessarily a list of affected codes.
-
Hi Walter :)
My area code is on your last list.
But I Live.. North Wales ???
Two Things To Note Though...
1] One of the Hubs or whatever you call them :-\ for my area code ( exchange ) is in Manchester.
2] Heard that the problem only affects ADSL .. Not ADSL2+ ( And I'm On ADSL2+ ).
Thanks!

The problem has at last been resolved according to Plusnet's information received from BT.
Let us hope that they are correct this time.
We must accept that there will be failures from time to time but it seems unreasonable that the cause of a fault of this magnitude has not at least been summarised and made public.
One might also hope that remedial actions will be completed rapidly to avoid any such future incidents.
Given that there are so few RAS installations it would not seem unreasonable that at least one spare of every component is available on each site together with fully up to date back up data and the means to reload it.
It would also be reassuring if a comparison with the different 21CN RASs was provided again with appropriate back up spares and data.
Kind regards,
Walter

This has been a major service failure and i think we all have something to learn from this. Yesterday our phones didn't stop and it was mayhem. There is however some customers calling in with authentication issues this is down to the router resetting itself back to default username and password so all that needs to be done with that is re-enter your username and password back into the router and it will reconnect to your service. That is for those of you that still can not authenticate. Lets hope we never cross something as big and serious like this again and we can have steps put in place to avoid anything like this. Biggest outage i have EVER seen in the over 4 years i have been doing technical support for broadband!
Regards
Gary

Oh dear !
You'll see that England is mentioned including 01483 Guildford area which I know uses both Reading and Kingston upon Thames RASs.
I've just checked three BT Wholesale suplied services all with Zen and I can't detect any abnormal drops.
Perhaps this suggests UK-wide configuration or software faults rather than component failures as the problems are so widespread.

Gary
@Gary,
It does seem a bit odd that the effects have been so very widespread, and yet I haven't heard of any other ISP beyond Scotland & North England, other than PN, being seriously affected. I had reason to call Demon's helpline several times last week and, each time, they answered in the first ring, which is very unusual. Moreover, of the various explanations and excuses that they offered for the problem I was discussing (email access), none were related to this apparent nationwide outage.
Can you confirm that PN have checked the possibility that there is some other problem with PN's infrastructure, which occurred about the same time as the Edinburgh outage, and which is in fact completely unrelated? Or could it be that some critical component of PN's infrastructure happens to be in the affected area?
Regardless of that, are there any dialling codes, anywhere in the UK, which are NOT included in the list of area codes for PN customers apparently affected by these problems?

I notice my city(Sheffield)is not mentioned,and thats's where Plusnet's head office is ...
-
I also notice that whereas there are several members here who are customers of Plusnet, no such member has complained, on this forum, of a service break due to this situation.........other than to query the content of the Plusnet reports.
-
I also believe, but cannot prove, that BT themselves use the line phone number for authentication, but most other ISPs have to authenticate using their supplied passwords.
Whether PN as part of BT use the phone number or a different password might also affect this issue?
Neither Zen nor AAISP seem to be reporting the outage.
Kind regards,
Walter

>>>Neither Zen nor AAISP seem to be reporting the outage. <<<
Nor are Virgin Media. They did so report on the 30th. October, but now give the "all clear"
-
Does seem peculiar. To the West Bournemouth 01202 is noted and to the East Southampton/Portsmouth 02380 is too. 01425 in the New Forest area is not, nor is Salisbury 01722 to the north.
-
I'm with PN in Hampshire and have had no problems so far. I suggested earlier that these problems could be due to a widescale deployment of a software/firmware update possibly by BT to its exchange equipment. I think this would still be a viable explanation. What do others think?

Apart from those I referred to earlier 01622 Maidstone, 01580 Mid Kent(?), 01725 Rockbourne, are ones that I am familiar with not listed. Probably oodles more too,

I agree it's an interesting idea Tony, but it's hard to see why that should only affect one ISP, unless it's in line with Walter's thinking that maybe BT-owned ISPs use different authentication mechanism. But when the story initially broke, it didn't seem to be ISP-specific, it was just a general outage affecting Scotland and North of England.
Or maybe other ISPs are affected too, and just not being so open about it? But in that case, how come there's not been furious activity on the forums? And, for example, Demon actually answered the phone on the first ring last week, which is a first - they clearly weren't that busy.
I do hope PN, or other affected ISPs, will explain what happened in more detail, regardless of whose fault it was, as I'm obviously not the only one who's curious to know. :-\

-
As far as i am aware there is all different methods used for authentication so not all SP use the same method. VPI and VCI could be different like 02's which enable's a different way of authentication so there method isn't used by username and password authentication so there is the chance this is the reasons why some SP's where not included in the MSO. I am sure if i am wrong someone will correct me lol

Subject: Broadband connectivity issues (64349) - RESOLVED
This is an update to Saturday's announcement about broadband connectivity problems affecting users in Scotland, Ireland and parts of England.
Our suppliers have confirmed that this particular outage was cleared during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Call volumes to our support team however would suggest that there are still a number of localised/residual problems that may be affecting connectivity for some customers.
If you are still having problems then we suggest you check for outages in your area by checking the information available on our Usertools Site:

Subject: Planned BT Network Maintenance (Edinburgh Node) - Wednesday 10th November Midnight-6.00am
When's this work happening?
Early tomorrow morning, 10th November.
What does it affect?
Broadband connectivity.
How long will it take?
Up to six hours.
What does the work involve?
There have been a number of service failures at a node in Edinburgh recently that have affected a significant number of our broadband customers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of the North of England. BT and their equipment vendor plan to undertake further work to this node early tomorrow morning. The work is intended to increase load management capability on the node and mitigate any future issues.
Am I likely to notice the work?
We've been advised that the work will have no impact on customers. In the event that something unexpected happens large areas of the UK could suffer a loss of broadband connectivity.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Any customers having problems connecting once the maintenance is complete are advised to switch off their broadband equipment for 30 minutes before powering it back up and attempting to reconnect.
Kind Regards,
Bob Pullen
