Title: Updates

Uncs recent question has brought up a query that I've puzzled about for along time.  This may be a silly question but  ....  on the Add Remove list where the updates are listed, a lot of them date back a long time., some to 2006 !   Once the more recent ones are installed is it necessary to keep the old ones or are they cumulative updates which need the previous update  (does that make sense ? )

OR,  Should I just leave well alone ?   

My OS is  XP SP3
