Title: Anyone use Gmail. ?
Post by: tickmike on September 28, 2010, 09:54:30 PM
A friend of my sister in law has set up a Gmail account for her to use on her phone as she does not have a computer, because they could not think of her surname they put 'smith' which is wrong !.
But got her first name correct.
So the bit that's displayed before her email address is wrong.
eg.            'firstname smith {firstname at gmail.com}'
Because they did not use her surname (or wrong surname) in the email address, I'm thinking if I told her how to edit the display name to her correct name and also change her password and security details because the other people know them  >:D
Have I lost you yet. ;D

So my question is on a Gmail account can you edit your own details if she logs on ?.

Yes, but you can't change the account name (email address).

Yes, but you can't change the account name (email address).

But it's the name in front of the email address that is wrong... not the email address !

When I used Windows, in Outlook you can change the display name, as now in Linux on Thunderbird I can change my display name, so I thought you could change it in Gmail.

It may be easier to get my wife to show her how to set up another account. :(

Er, yes.  ???
This is a function of the email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. etc.), not the email SERVICE (gmail).
What CLIENT are you using?

Is this the setting you are looking for?

First of all, select "Settings" from the home page (not in picture) followed by "accounts and Import" then on the "Send mail as:" section chose the edit function.

As you can see, I changed the name to Fred Blogs

Sorry it looks a bit messy, but I'm sure you will understand it.

You can lead a horse to water oldfogy.....

Obviously that's the answer for the google mail web client interface.  ;D

(assuming that's what the OP is using - they didn't actually say......)  8)

Re: Anyone use Gmail. ?

I use MailWasher and OE, and it is not possible to change any of the account settings in either of those two programs, so it is going to have to be changed in Google's actual accounts settings.

Yes now that looks like the info I want ( I would think Gmail is similar interface ?). Thanks.

You must realise that I'm doing this blind as I do know any thing about her phone, what client she is using or how the other people set it up, etc.

I've now got to explain to her over the phone how to do it , to someone who does not know anything about emails or technology :'( .  ( it would be easier if I could just pop around and I could sort it out for her)

On that interface can you change passwords as well ?.

2. ( it would be easier if I could just pop around and I could sort it out for her)

1. Google and Gmail are both the same.

2. Will she not just give you the account password, then you can make the changes from your PC.
(Sign in with the email address and password)

3. Yes you can change the password from the account settings also.

Can you make @gmail.com accounts now in the UK?

I know they got banned once.

Sorry O.T.

Sorry O.T.

In the UK @Googlemail has now been replaced with @Gmail......Although I think you can still continue using an existing @googlemail.com address

I don't want a Gmail account, but have just gone through the motions of setting one up.

Gmail.com was the only extension I was offered.

That's correct TD....Mine was @googlemail.com one and I choose to switch over to @gmail.com when the option was offered a few months back.

If you look at Oldfogys screenshot you will see at the top of the image the option to switch over from googlemail to gmail (highlighted in green)

All new accounts are automatically signed up to gmail

Edit..just looked at my account settings and there is still the option to switch back to googlemail (can't see what difference it makes tbh, apart from typing fewer letters) :)

Don't be put of by that screenie, because although they are offering me to change to Gmail, it's already a Gmail address, not Googlemail and I have been using it for the last two years.
So regardless of which address you already have you will probably still see and be offered the chance of changing.

edit
It's obviously just a standard generic page format regardless of account type.
