Title: Wireless N 5GHz routers (or access points)
Post by: HPsauce on September 28, 2010, 11:48:43 AM
Not a subject I've seen a lot of discussion on yet, but I'm thinking of moving to 5GHz (or dual-band) on my network.
I already have 2 PC's that are 5GHz-capable with dual-band PCI-Express wireless adapters.

When I look at "wireless-N" routers and AP's in detail the great majority are actually only 2.4GHZ devices. This seems to be potentially flawed as all you get is more bandwidth by using more of the (overlapping) 12/13 available 2.4GHz channels. Throw in interference from neighbours and it's all looking a bit iffy.... :-\

After a bit of research the Netgear WNDR3700 looks "plausible" as an add-on device to my boring old DG834GT modem/router (with DGTeam firmware).

Anyone using this or got any other thoughts?

PS I'm not looking for an all-in-one ADSL modem/router/WAP/gigabit switch. Happy to separate ADSL and internal network functions into 2 devices.
