Nice one! There's also a plethora of online testing tools at http://www.dslreports.com/tools (although the port scanner seems to be offline at this moment).
And another free antivirus system, but only for Unix/Linux systems, is http://www.clamav.net/

Great Move Kitz.
Ones I have used on windows machines are AVG. ZoneAlarm, SpywareBlaster, A-Squared, Adaware, SpyBot,
All Free Never had any problems at home or the school I used to look after.
Re Eric ..."And another free antivirus system, but only for Unix/Linux systems"
Another one is 'ClamWin' http://www.clamwin.com/
I have it on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server !. or you can use it on Unix/Linux
Michael.

Cool, didn't realise there was a Win32 port
It's worth pointing out from the site that "ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware."
-
ESET (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) have a decent online scanner now too.
-
Not forgetting a couple of Microsoft's own free tools
1) Web-browser-based simple scanner -
Windows Live Onecare Safety Scanner - http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
which is strongly recommended as it doesn't pollute your machine, slow it down or make it unreliable by interfering with its normal operation long term, because you just run it and then close the program and it doesn't remain permanently running.
2) For WinXp / Server 2003 users _only_: Microsoft's Windows Defender is a free antispyware/malware tool of the "resident" type
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
and is also very well behaved. It does some 'live' monitoring for certain changes and does scheduled scans. It does come with a certain cost in terms of performance but this can be minimised as its schedule for running scans is customisable and this flexibility can be exploited to make a big difference.

I am getting regular reminders to update my Free AVG v 9 with AVG 2011. As is usual with these new updates I'm hanging on until any bugs have been corrected. Has anyone here tried it yet and what do they think?

I've installed a couple of copies. OK so far and "seems" to include better Spyware protection than before.

Thanks, HP.

I use avast and zone alarm. why are they just second? :(

The order is not significant and is not intended to rate the various products.

Try this site for free or cheap softwear : store.v3.co.uk.
I got AVG2011 Internet Security free for a year and Ashampoo Burning Studio Advanced free.

AVG 2011 is causing users a lot of problems........would advise to stay clear and use either Avast or Avira.

AVG 2011 is causing users a lot of problems
Just removed it for one of my clients this afternoon (and installed MSE).
It was producing weird error messages and not updating.
The uninstall failed with a meaningless message.
The AVG Removal Tool "hung" running endlessly with 100% CPU! >:D
And it was the same after a reboot, so I terminated it all "with extreme prejudice" and lots of manual deletions. >:(

My installs on two machines both running XPPro are OK after a fortnight. The only initial peculiarity I had on one machine was a variable scan duration between 30 minutes and an hour on successive days. It now seems to have settled down to about 35 minutes. I shall be watching it carefully after UncleUB's post.

As you can see AVG 2011 is not very well received.

I have been using Kapersky for quite a time now as it came free with Barclays bank.
Seems quite good but I do over ride it not to scan some software.

I only came across this while reading replies to recent problems, I found this very helpful Uncle.
I read the comments regarding AVG causing problems and as my wife has(Had) AVG on her laptop I wondered if it could have caused her little problems too, anyway today I used the AVG removal tool and installed Microsoft Security Essentials for her, everything appears to have gone smoothly, so thanks again all.

Peter

Nice to hear you have sorted the problem Peter.MSE does seem to be well received by many users.
Another AV free version which is very well thought of is Avast.
It doesn't hurt to have a bit extra protection so you might want to consider Malwarebytes free version. It is an on demand scanner.I myself just do a quick scan with it every week
You can get it safely from FileHippo( a well respected download site)

http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx?lcid=1033
Norton Power Eraser
Eliminates deeply embedded and difficult to remove crimeware that traditional virus scanning doesn't always detect.

Microsoft Safety Scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-gb/default.aspx
If you think you have a virus/malware problem the download and run the free scanner. The application is changed every 10 days, just download a new version as needed.

AVG 2012 Standalone LinkScanner
I put in a strong plug for AVG 2012 Standalone LinkScanner. It works well with other firms' AV software and provides good extra defence from web borne threats. It is also resource light.

PC Pro magazine (March 2013, issue 221) has reviewed 16 security suites. Is speaks glowingly of Avast! free (version 7) which turns in a performance little inferior to BitDefender and Trend Micro Platinum but is a free product. It speaks far from glowingly about AVG free 2013 and contrasts the dim performance of AVG 2013 against AVG 2012 which it recommended in 2012.
Of particular note is the performance of Avast! in preventing damage by zero day threats. It scores 98% in comparison with 100% for both BitDefender and Trend Micro Platinum. Avast!'s Behaviour Shield is coming into its own.
MSE was found to be a tail-end Charlie with respect to protection performance.

Thanks Hake

Please consider the following two very useful security tools: -
1. MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/forum/142-news-questions-and-comments/
2. CryptoPrevent https://www.foolishit.com/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/
The respective web sites explain. I use both of these. Anti-Exploit protect web browsers and Java in real-time for free. Both are designed to work with Windows XP and later.
EMET 4 and 5 users will find that EAF and ROP mitigations will probably need to be disabled for those apps protected by Anti-Exploit. If any have problems with this, please PM me.
