I got stuck the other day trying to open a .RAR file on a PC, who did not have a compatible program to open it with, then found this on the net and the best part of it is "it's FREE"
It's simply called "7z442" which is a RAR type file extractor.
It can be downloaded from here:-

Sorry but for some reason I could not get the hyperlink facility to work properly, so you will have to copy and paste the address, it is there.
Okay, the link seems to be working now....

looks quite good. :)
A few other formats it supports and some more info
High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression
7-Zip is free software distributed under the GNU LGPL
Supported formats: 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB
For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip

I thought that those 'in the know' would have already been aware of 7zip. I've had it for some time now.
Try setting up a flash drive with portable apps to carry around - very useful. I have Clamwin (av), Open Office, Firefox, 7zip, and even a modified version of SpyBot S&D all on one drive.
I have my own 'home page' on the drive which is basically a web site of all my useful sites.
Space left to create a few documents on the fly too.
