Post by: UncleUB on June 21, 2010, 01:48:32 PM
Opera 10.54 is available by clicking Help>Check for updates,

or via FileHippo here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_opera/

There is also version 10.60,but that is a beta version.

Thanks for the heads-up, unkyUb.

As you say, 10.60 is still a beta but is the next version with added or improved features.
This new 10.54 fixes a security issue in 10.53.

I am sticking to my 10.10 for now until they sort out the issue with the 10.5* versions not opening external hyperlinks properly....fussy me.. :D

Hi Zoe  :)

I really like Opera, once you find your way round its very good and very fast. There are a couple of sites I use that don't get on too well with Opera but not a problem.

One is The Campingandcaravanningclub. The main site is ok but when you want to use the siteseeker option it says  you need IE,Firefox,Chrome or Safari browsers.

They have just altered it to a new version, the old one worked fine with Opera. :shrug2:

So I just use Firefox if I want to use that option

UnkyUb, once on the home page of that site and when using Opera, right click on a blank area then go edit site preferences>network and change the browser identification menu from Opera to "mask as Firefox"

Seems to do the trick for me  :)

Thanks TD,never thought of that  :-[

It didn't work when I selected>Mask as Firefox,

But did work when I selected>Identify as Firefox

I'm sticking with my older version for the time being.
Two things I don't like in this new version :-

1. Opera Software persist in their refusal to fix the bug where external links will not open properly.
2. It appears that in version 10.60, Opera Software have "done-a-deal" with AVG to "supply" the definitions engine for the anti-phising filters...and I don't want anything to do with AVG.

Opera version 10.10 for me....... :)

Where do you find a problem with links?

If you click on a link in a POP3 email ( for example ) Opera will fire up as it should...but at your set home page and not on the site to which the link was relevant.....you then have to go back to the email and click the link a second time to get Opera to go to the site correctly.
The same applies to any other link in any document type.

However, if you click a link in an IMAP mail, Opera will open the site correctly.
Of course, to access an imap mail you will already have your browser open to access your webmail server.

In other words, clicking on a link in a pop3 mail or other document type when your Opera browser is closed......wrong page opens...........click  on a imap link,  when the browser is open..........page opens correctly.

So, to open correctly a link in a pop3 mail, you must either click-browser opens-go back to mail-click again on link..................or have the browser open before you open your email client...open mail..click on link.
Both these options are a pest and a waste of time.

Small point, I know, but in my wee sideline business of offering genealogical research it can become a right pain and it has been like this for all versions since 10.10.
Opera have been told time after time, their forum is full of members complaining of this...but no remedial action is forthcoming unless I have missed something.
I have asked several time on their forum if the issue has been resolved, but cannot get any confirmation........and I will not update my version until I know the issue is fixed.

How very odd.  I have never seen this error and I use a lot of links from email and it has never happened with links in any form of document.

I have a pop3 account on my 1and1 server and just fired of a test mail to myself with several URL's listed, all of them opened without any problem. Don't know what to suggest really,is anyone else seeing this problem?

I have asked around all the folk that I know use Opera and all have said they have never seen this "Links" issue .

Have you tried saving your bookmarks/contacts/settings etc. and doing a clean install instead of running the upgrade?

Sometimes, when updating Opera to a newer version it is preferable to do a clean install rather than an update, and it is always possible to lose such as bookmarks/prefs/passwords etc doing that, or even when doing an update through the built in "check for updates" option.

There is an excellant little program which will backup all the relevant data ready for replacement if the need arise.
TD has this now installed, very small and light and good insurance.

ps....this is not spam, I have no interest in the author or the prog.

Find it at http://my.opera.com/Disco%20Stu/blog/opera-settings-import-export-tool  ...............it is recommended by the boffins at Opera.  :)
