Title: Members Helpfulness
Post by: oldfogy on July 07, 2006, 12:55:22 AM
I was thinking of an alternative with regards to forum rankings. And instead of the "conventional" method?
Would it be possible to be able to leave selecting the helpfulness of contributors down to the person posting the question?

I.E. After receiving a reply to a question the "originator" then has to select from a small selection of pre-set questions which would appear just below their login name.

Although for this to work it would have to be linked to each registered person (of which I don't know is possible)
Also the option could be automatically un-available for "Fun Forums"

"Question" Was this persons reply considered to be:
1. = Very helpful
2. = Not very helpful
3. = Time waster
4. = Undecided

With the result of questions 1 - 3, being tagged to the members name.

I don't like the idea at all. It would take away a lot of the spontaneity of the forum, and would also tend to create a competitive situation instead of a cooperative one.

I think I know the sort of thing you are meaning OF, Ive seen similar on a couple of other forums, where the poster of the original question awarded points to the member whose answer proved to be most helpful.

Whilst in theory this could be a good idea, Ive also seen some disputes over the points awarded - some times everyone chipping in their 2p can help the OP find the answer.
I'd also hate for anyone to refrain from posting a possible suggestion just incase they got a *poor* rating - Im sure most of us in the past have perhaps tried to help someone but inadvertantly gone down the wrong path.

This may all be a moot point anyhow, because you cant do this sort of thing with the phpbb software - although I must admit I havent checked to see if there is a mod where other people can award some sort of rating system.

Aside from the number of posts count thing, you can however arrange for *member groups* to be given titles..  perhaps as time goes by the "regs" could perhaps if they like nominate certain members a special tag such as helpful/brightspark/etc I'm not averse to doing this if you as regular members want to come up with some titles/suggestions.

I dont want this forum to be somewhere though where is gets to the point where things are so competitive that it puts people of posting anything.  Anyone is more than welcome to suggest anything, (as long as its not too rude ;) ) and youve have started off a very good debate to see what other people think or want.
Keep any suggestions coming :)

As an aside I think I may have mentioned to a couple of you already, that atm theres a few things/quirks about phpbb that Im not 100% happy about (mostly on the admin side of things) and I may look at transfering everying over to SMF when I get the chance.
(and when mr_chris is on hand just in case I stuff up the DB side of things ;) )

Yes, initially I wanted to see/test how the "Poll" worked and was setup. The suggestion was to make it worthwhile.
Possibly more than a practicable one as I do very much believe in (KISS) "Keep It Simple Stupid" no not you. :lol:

A good job that there is the function to "Edit" because I discovered that there needs to be a "BLANK POLL" left at the bottom of the selections for it to setup properly.
