A friend of my wife has just phoned me with a query regarding email.  Someone has told her that Windows 7 only accepts Hotmail, is this correct?

Sorry the details a sparse but she only had the new PC from last Friday and is not very sharp on the IT subjects, ( Worse than me even! :-[)  Her ISP is talktalk.

No, that is not correct.

Windows 7 does not ship with a "built-in" email client such as Outlook Express but there is nothing to stop you installing something such as Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird etc. etc. to use as a POP3 client.

IMAP, web based email systems, such as Hotmail, Gmail, YahooMail etc. etc can be accessed through the browser as in previous versions of Windows.

As explained above, in simplistic terms you could interpret it that way.
(assuming "Hotmail" means generically any web-based email)
(assuming "accepts" actually means provides itself initially)
The old Outlook Express is NOT there in any guise, but you are free to install almost any email client.
Trouble is, lots of people will have no idea where to start. :'(

The Mozilla  download page   (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/download)

to download  "Thunderbird "

the   support page    (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/support) will provide answers to many common questions



And of course there will always be someone here  to provide assistance, whatever package your friend decides on

Well thanks guys, I can see I shall have to pay her a visit and do my best, although the guy who she got her new PC from has to return to set up a router and some other programmes.

It's hard work trying to teach her as she will interupt instaed of listening.

I very much appreciate all you help and I'll tell her about Kitz.
