Title: Netgear DG834v4 question
Post by: twinkle on January 27, 2010, 12:25:53 PM

maybe someone can help me here. I have recently sold a Netgear DG834 v4 wireless router which was working fine for me. I have now heard from the buyer to say he wants to return this item to me for a full refund as the signal of this is, in his words, very, very, weak & he cannot connect to the internet. As I said, it was working ok for me & just wonder why he would experience this problem. Could it be its not compatible with his connection? I could refund him I know but if its because he has simply bought the wrong one then why should I? Any answers appreciated. thanks

Hi Twinkle and welcome,

This could be a VERY big can of worms !
Has he reloaded the firmware or even bricked the modem ?
Did he have a fully working modem beforehand and has he copied his modem setup parameters correctly into your modem?
(Did you erase your username and password before you sent it to him?)
Has he changed any other parameters he should have left alone?
Tell him about this site with comprehensive instructions on setting up ADSL modems.
Has he changed his wiring or removed filters ?

Kind regards,
Walter

Is he complaining about a low signal on the wireless connection.?

How far away ftom the router is his computer?

Caveat emptor.

Legally, the question will be eactly how did you describe the router at the point when you offered to sell, and at the point when the other party offered to buy.

If you did not make undue or untrue claims for the routers capability (in respect to the areas where the buyer is complaining ) or if you made no claims at all as to it's performance then the risk lies with the buyer.

Did you originally claim that the wireless function would operate succesfully over the distances stated by the buyer as being required, or describe in any manner the level of performance that he may reasonably expect from that particular example of that router model.

If you did make statements to potential or actual buyers in respect of performance, did you stress that the performance figures you may have quoted were that experienced on your PC and on your configuration and that the same may not be experienced on his configuration ( here, I think of the words of wisdom posted by waltergmw above)  , on his PC, on his ISP and on his telephone line.

thanks for your replies. This is how he worded his message
I tried to connect to internet but this wireless signal is very very weak so I can't use the internet. Can I refund this??
I have sent a reply to get him to check settings & asked him about filters but have not, as yet, received another message.
I am reluctant to refund him as it was working perfectly when I last used it a few weeks ago.

I made no untrue claims. I stated it had been used & came with ethernet cable but not the telephone cable nor the filter. I said it had been used previously with a Virgin connection. He did not ask anything regarding distance or performance

In that case, twinkle, I would reason that the buyer has no case to demand a refund.

I would, in your case, refuse his request and forget the matter........if the buyer insists, speak to a lawyer.

I have now heard from the buyer of the router & although I asked him questions regarding his filters etc he hasn't answered these. His reply is:

I connected all properly and I am living small flat and there is olny 2 bed rooms. I can use the internet by the lan line but when I tried to use wireless, the signal is very weak and difficult to use the internet. Sorry about this,

So, from what he has said here, its working but weak??  I can't believe he wants me to refund him if his connection is poor?  I will contact him again & ask him about other things people on here have mentioned. Such is life!! ???
