Title: Internet Usage
Post by: BritBrat on January 25, 2010, 05:53:45 PM
Any maths buffs out there?

Could you tell me how long it would take to download 1,420GB at 8 meg.

download 1,420GB at 8 meg.

you do mean one thousand four hundred and 20 Giga BYTE ?

regards jeff

if its 1.420Gbytes then at 8 meg it will take ~24minutes
if it is 1,420Gbytes then at 8 meg it will take  400hrs
:fingers:
Ok I have seen o2 are saying some user has downloaded 1,420Gbytes in a month

Edit BTW no assumptions made regarding actual throughput

It all depends on your download speed.

If your TRUE download speed was (say) 4Mbit/s, then you would download 500kByte/s. But because of packet overheads this would drop to (say) 450kbyte/s.

So, 1 Megabyte would take 1/0.45 sec = 2.2 seconds

Then, 1 Gigabyte would take 2,200 seconds

And 1420Gigabytes would take 1420x2200 sec = 3,124,000 sec
= 52,067 minutes
= 868 hours
= 36.2 days
= 5.2 weeks
So, over 1.5 months

Good luck!

Gentlemen,

It is not unknown for the download quantity figures to be wildly above practical limits upon occasion.

Kind regards,
Walter

It depends upon your computer capacity and internet speed.

NO . the question already gave the parameters .

quote Could you tell me how long it would take to download 1,420GB at 8 meg.

Theres a very rough calculator here but it doesnt take into account overheads.
Thats the difficult bit because at various stages of the route there will be different types of overheads, which subtract from the true download speed.

Wondered why my post got bumped.

Anyway I left O2 and there was no way you could download what they said some members did, impossible with the O2 service.

They now have a fixed cap of 40Gig on the access product.

So to sum up if they say unlimited it really means 40Gig a month.

Now with Plusnet and next move may be back to Zen @ 100Gig download limit and no upload limit.

lmao..   oh I so remember the days of dial up and trying to transfer files to friend via the ICQ file transfer.

I used to approximate that I could get about 10-11 MB in 2 hours, before BT would kick me off.
Now I can do that in about 10-11 seconds

I got thrown out of BT Anytime for to much usage on Dialup and I had two accounts.

Well not thrown out put on a phone number that would not let you connect and when you did was so slow untill it disconnected a short while after.

004 club member :)

Just noticed must be 10 years or more ago.

It's alright for you rich folks, I couldn't afford to stay online that long. Apart from that the wife wanting to use the phone as soon as I started downloading.

>> I got thrown out of BT Anytime for to much usage on Dialup

I was on a final warning the month adsl came to this exchange..  boy was I clamping at the bit to get broadband.   My last few months were a case of watch every minute and my daughter could only use the internet the same time I did.
I was doing a mostly DLC  modules with remote login, add on the amount of time I spent online for research etc then I found their new time limits harsh.

There were times when if reading a long tech page..  I wait for it to load, go offline, read it and reconnect later to check out any links or page 2 etc.

BT Anytime to me was a bargain.  Im one of those that have had £100 per month phone bills :-[
(that was when I was also working at the Bank and could afford it)

lol £12 a month to U Net for dial up access and £100 phone bills eke.

I remember £150 a month.

Now BT are lucky to get £15 :)  but it is going up 50p line rental and nothing to do with broadband tax.

Yeah that was easily do-able, I restricted day time use to keep it down.

Did anyone else use IC24 or ICScotland?  It was completely free access via an 0800 number and I found it worked pretty well, although you had to reconnect after an hours use.
