Hmmm - looked at that, but can't log in from any of my machines, although I was on this afternoon to a friend in PR China.

OK this morning - no apparent reason for no login last night. :-\

weird. glad its all sorted now though

It happened again this morning and I tried re-intalling Skype only to end up with an install error - code 1603.
After trawling on't Internet, I finally solved it. One of Microsoft's latest updates seems to have corrupted the install and the solution is http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=85962 (http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=85962)
Follow the uninstaller advice AND uninstall ANYTHING that says Skype, not just the things they say. It worked and I am back online with the world!!

Just so's anyone else with the problem needs to know.

Well done Colin, and thanks for the information. :)

error - code 1603.
One of Microsoft's latest updates seems to have corrupted the install
In some cases when you try to upgrade Skype you will get error 1603 while installing.
The error 1603 occurs during the process of uninstallation of the previous Skype version in case Skype is not able to find the cached PluginManager.msi file on your system.
This fix is good for you only when you have Extras Manager installed and have deleted the cached file.
This appears to be a Skype error and not a MS problem.
But at least you have it sorted.

Not entirely true - I didn't have the Extras Manager installed. I replicated the fault on another of my PCs by running Skype (ok), allowing an MS update that appeared this morning, and ..... you guessed it .... Skype didn't work. So, whilst the cure was originally for the Skype fault, I found it also worked for the (new) fault.

I just installed one of the two MS updates (daylight saving fix) and Skype is still working ok.
(I don't use IE8, so do not download that/those updates) "IE6 still works fine for me, what little I use it"
Maybe we have different versions of Skype installed (v3.0.0.25) never bothered updating it as it does what I need it to do. So that may be another factor.

My version of Skype is/was v 4.x can't remember what the sub-version x is.
