Have people nothing better to moan at.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/07/bt_muswell_hill/
I'll have one asap.

I must say that a simple green cabinet at the side of the road isn't anything which I would describe as an eyesore. The traffic on the road is a lot uglier.
-
Oh dear. I suppose it does depend on where its located... but I do wonder if many people complain how much it could affect the FTTC roll out.
How many times do you go past Green cabs and not even notice they are there unless someone has scrawled graffiti over them.
I suppose because they are different and new, then it draws the eye to it. :/

Mike Snowdon, a spokesman for Haringey Council, said: "There were objections from a number of people and organisations, including the Conservation Area Advisory Committee.
I suppose this is a well to do area with streets full of jobsworths, with nothing else to occupy their sad little lives

Are these (http://anonym.to/?http://e.gg/7974145) the cabinets that they are complaining about? :-\
-
Yep those are the ones.
Theres a bit more info / pic inside of one showing the mini-dslam @ Modular Solutions (http://modular-solution.com/2009/03/27/next-generation-broadband-fttc/).

Good grief,is that all they are............
-
yep - next time you go out - really start looking and you'll be surprised how many of the normal BT green cabs are about..
Around here we also have a fair few grey cabs that are way larger than that - Ive not investigated what they are though.
Like I say its kinda one of those things that most of the time you dont notice just because 'theyve always been there'.
-
I've seen plenty of the standard green cabinets dotted around, but these new ones don't look all that different. Perhaps they are a little larger but there is absolutely no way that they are 1.8 metres high.
Perhaps they should redesign them to look like the old red telephone boxes :D

I did wonder about that myself
1.8 Meters (m) = 5.91 Feet (ft.).... judging by this pic (http://e.gg/7974145) they look more like 5 foot at most? ... and like you say not that much bigger than the standard green cabs.
Perhaps they should redesign them to look like the old red telephone boxes

Now theres an idea

Looking at the TBB article:-
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/4011-aaisp-connects-first-business-on-bt-fibre-to-the-cabinet-pilot.html
it does seem that the new cabinets are larger than the ones we are all familiar with.
If you'd like to see all the details you'll find the planning application for:-
Installation of 1 x green coloured telecommunications cabinet, 1600mm x 1200mm x 450mm
here:-

I believe one objection is that the new large cabinet is in addition to the existing one.
Whether it would be possible to transfer the existing E and D side cabling into a single cabinet is another matter, although such an operation has the potential for more disruption to the existing services.
It is perhaps unfortunate that BT chose to involve their narrowband wayleaves office in Shrewsbury rather than someone a little closer who might have realised that Muswell Hill is a conservation area.
Furthermore an informal meeting with the planners beforehand might have helped instead of installing the cabinet before obtaining planning permission which again is unfortunate.
All the current FTTC installations are part of the first pilot trials so let's hope that all aspects of planning and installation will be addressed in the next deployments.
Kind regards,
Walter

Thanks for that info walter.

Not sure either if it is or not.. but I should imagine it would cause more disruption if it was possible.
>> than someone a little closer who might have realised that Muswell Hill is a conservation area
I should imagine too that there are many areas who would beg to be on the trial and happily have the new boxes installed.

Indeed.

I just hope that this event doesn't set back the rollout too much.

@ Kitz
Just a footnote........
By contrast Rutland Telecom started their planning permission process on 14th February, obtained their permission on 28th April (again I believe in a conservation area), completed the civils work on 24th July and expect to install their cabinet next Thursday.
http://www.rutlandtelecom.co.uk/lyddington/
As they are a separate commercial entity they would have to install a separate cabinet in any case.
Kind regards,
Walter
