Title: extension cables
Post by: tuftedduck on June 16, 2009, 09:39:05 AM
I wonder if a kindly soul could give old TD a bit of advice... :)

I am considering rearranging my computer room, and my plan would involve the PC being placed about six feet further away from the BT phone socket than it is currently.

This would mean that my current PC to socket via the router cabling would be about three feet short..

The question is........which would be the more efficient, to extend the router to socket cable, or the router to PC ethernet cable..?

Thank you in advance for any comments.. :)

Hi TD,

The theory dictates you should always opt for  longer LAN cable and short phone cable.  Ethernet is good for hundreds of feet without any degradatrion at all.  Whereas anytime you extend the phone wiring (or modem cable) you're probably picking up more interference that may well degrade your speed.

That said, if it suits you better to extend the modem cable, 3 feet may not make a lot of difference either way.

And in any case it's an inexact science - there's a small but finite possibility that if you extend the modem cable and move the router, it may end up in a place that's quieter (in terms of interference), which would give you better speed.  That's unlikely though.

I would second what 7LM has said.Ethernet cables are usually very good quality and the distance you plan to move would not make any difference.

Good morning, 7LM, and thank you for your time and trouble in replying and for your clear advices.

Longer LAN cable it is...........off to spend some money.  ;D

Thank you again.  :)

Ooops, just spotted that unkyUb has popped by.... ;D...thank you for that, will go ahead on that basis.  :)
