Hey guys, different one for you this time ;D
Right, my dads getting a new pc to replace his old one. How easy will it be to set up the internet for it? His old PC has the internet as do the others.
Is it just a case of installing the AOL Software, connecting the router to the pc and it's working or will it be a much harder way for us as we're rubbish with PC's. Will he have to mess about with the settings and change things?

If he has an AOL disc,just install it and follow the instructions.

Like i said, he already has AOL screen name, password, etc, i was just wondering if it needed setting up to the router or if it would just connect straight away.

It will probably connect straight away without doing anything at all, just connect the LAN cable.
Almost certainly no need to run anything from the CD either, just go straight to the AOL home page and login to get email etc.

Ah great, so the cable from the ocmputer to the router?
For some reason he likes using AOL programme to use for the internet so he'll prob be installing that anyway.

Yes, if you like the AOL interface and are familiar with it just install it, from CD or download.
Otherwise any browser works fine.
There's a feature in AOL called something like personal folders or storage, if that's used I think there are additional steps to take. But email, contacts etc. are all held centrally in AOL and just reappear when you log in.

Another question slightly off topic,
The new pc he's got has XP Pro on which was put on by the guy who made it, but he hasn't got an activation code or authenticiation code for it.
Is there anything he can do, or is he just going to have to go out and buy a new XP Pro / XP from the shop.
Also, if he buys XP pro can he overwrite the XP Pro that's on it?

Well, first he needs to talk to the guy who supplied it. Either a Windows licence was included in the price or it wasn't. If it was, then the guy must provide the details. If it wasn't then he has to buy a licence.

Apparently, it is just for the build of the pc, he put him XP Pro on as he though XP Pro was running from his current PC so he could have used that code, but he was only using XP.
Will it be a case of going out and buying the proper XP Pro from the shop then?

If he is replacing the old PC, then does he have the XP disc and S/N?
If yes, then re-install that onto the new PC and save some money.
If he does not have the disc, you can still retrieve the serial number from the old PC then borrow another XP disc and use that.

It depends on what was installed on the old PC. If it was an OEM version it's not transferrable; only a full retail copy can be moved.
If the old PC was a major brand (e.g. Dell HP etc.) it will almost certainly be OEM so no use whatsoever.
The other way forward is to leave it on, connect to t'internet and wait for the Microsoft Validation to "throw a wobbly" at which point you can buy the appropriate keys etc. direct from them.

Sorry to disagree, but I have had this conversation on other forums and do not agree that OEM's are not transferable.
Although a phone call to MS may be needed to explain that the previous copy has been removed from the old PC and is now required on the new PC.
But as you say, go to the MS update site and see if it's recognised as a pirate copy or not first.

Indeed you should be ;D , but as a sometime (professional) Microsoft Licensing specialist I know you're wrong. The OEM licenses used by Dell etc. are most definitely NOT transferable to the sort of system described.
If you, as a system builder, buy a "standard" commercial (non-specific) OEM license then there are some circumstances when it's arguable, but that's not what I was describing. ;)

Glad to hear you managed to get things sorted.
HP:
I can only go by my own experiences of using a XP OEM disc from one PC to another on at least three separate occasions without any problem.
Who knows, maybe on the one occasion I did have to ring MS I must have spoken to a very compassionate lady.

@oldfogy - just because it works doesn't make it legal. ;)
Some OEM CD's also check the BIOS and won't run at all on the wrong hardware, but not all by any means.
