Title: Computer Clock Always Wrong?

Hi all,

My Dad's computer is now 3years old.

However, the clock is always the wrong time. I sync it with the Time online however it looses it again overnight.

Is it time I replaced the battery on the motherboard? How can I find out? No messages come up at boot so...

What I can't understand though is that my computer is nearly five years old and (touch wood) I am yet to replace the battery on the Mobo, and its on more than my Dads!

Any help most appreciated  :)

Yeah, its time for a change of battery....Normally a CR2032, can be got anywhere....

Its the first thing I`d do...

Probably the date is wrong ,normally when Battery is failing the date goes as well.

As mentioned above, it is probably the motherboard battery.
The first signs are losing time, then you lose the cmos settings such as the boot order and when it really gets bad, you will get checksum errors during bootup.

How long they last for..............I guess its down to quality. Never had a battery fail with me and I have a spare computer that is nearly 10 years old.

Let us know if the problems persists after battery replacement.

Ok thanks to all.

Will open up the PC tomorrow and take a look at the battery, will get my Dad to buy one then.

Its only lost the time so far, the date is still all ok.

If it is a CR2032 battery (very probable) you can get them anywhere (try the local market) and they are quite cheap.

@Jid  Make sure you have the new battery before you take out the old one . Just open up to check the number .

After changing you may have to eneter BIOS to reset drives.

So after changing the battery I may need to adjust BIOS settings, such as Time & Date is it?

I got a pack of 10 recently for £3.45 (delivered) via Amazon.
The seller was called Aquarius computers.  ;)
Cheaper than driving to Argos. 8)

If the old battery is very low, or some time elapses between removing the old one and putting the new one in, the BIOS settings may be lost altogether. If this happens, you'll probably get a message when you boot, saying that you have to go into the BIOS setup. It will then be set to its defaults, and you'll need to set the time and date, but probably nothing else.

Took old one out new one in, no settings lost. Resynced the time and all good to go :)

Glad its sorted...

Errors with time setting on re-boot/boot-up are almost always the battery & its a fairly easy/cheap thing to try.

Some bios`s will flag an error about other stuff, depends on the settings & hardware.

Yeh the the computer is Acer and they modified the BIOS so...

Anyway 3quid for two batteries isn't bad, they are of better quality than the battery in there before anyway.
