Hey, dont know if this was already posted etc but here it is.
Was reading an artical that by 2012 Virgin are going to be releasing their 200mb speeds which is pretty impressive i should think =)

If its anything like the roll out of 50meg then only about 50 people will be able to get for a few months :lol:
As well as that, I wouldn't know what to do with all that bandwidth ???

but did the following thought occur to anyone else?
Currently their TS policy for 'S' cuts in once youve downloaded 200MB and then they start throttling
... and then think how long it would take to download 200MB on a 200Mbps line!

Just as a matter of interest Virgin Media have recently increased their UL and DL limits, although not by very much.
Although the M & L tariff are shown as being different, this "may not" be the case.

Given that they throttle and were also considering using Phorm, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Saying that, they only serve densely populated urban areas and therefore couldn't get their 50Mbps even if I wanted to. :P

I think that you start to hit many other infrastructure limits before you get anywhere near 200Mb/s of meaningful data. Large downloads would be hit by server limitations etc.
So, I'd be interested to see what 'real world' responses users get from accessing web sites, say, ebay.

I Upload/download quite a lot, somewhere in the region of 100GB PM, providing I do not fall foul of the Traffic Management policy I don't have any problems.
Although I know of other people who DL/UL a lot more than that.

I get the 10Mb service here in Edinburgh from Virgin at home, and the 8Mb service from BT at work. They both have their upsides and downsides.
BT are filtering out my DCC traffic at work which is a real PITA (and no it's not a company policy, cos I actually set that), so although BT have dropped Phorm for now, they are still doing other forms of deep packet inspection. At least I never get near their Fair Use threshold :)
Virgin do a fair bit of rate-capping, but generally speaking after about 10 or 11 pm, things go nice and fast. So I get 1.2MB/s downloads which is very nice. Although the up speed is quite low at ~ 40KB/s. So although Virgin isn't ADSL it is still very much asymmetric.
I could get the 20Mb service right now, but it is far too expensive, unless I take a whole raft of unwanted TV crap. Like many others here, I would have absolutely no idea what to do with a 200Mb service. Even if I were to set loads of unattended downloads, I simply don't have the hard disk space to store them ....
All in all, I find cable is more reliable than ADSL (but Virgin customer relations can be a nightmare when things go astray) and there aren't the same fluctuations due to local loop lengths, line interference etc. Despite claims about ADSL2++ and other esoterica of the twisted pair line, the only real chance of fast broadband is by optical cables. And that generally means Virgin for home users.

Yep they use Ellacoyas to identify the type of traffic, and then apply various QoS/ToS depending on the identified time of traffic.
