Over the past three years, Carphone has used its mobile phones retail outlets to also sign up customers to its fixed-line phone and broadband services.

But pressures over a growing debt pile and a focus on selling customers a wider range of computer and internet-related gadgets and services led Carphone a year ago to put its retail assets into a joint venture with Best Buy, the leading US consumer electronics company. The move allowed Carphone to cut its net debt from £843m to a forecast of £180m for the year.

Its well known that CPW has been subsidising certain of its retails operations such as TalkTalk for broadband services.

Its also announced this morning that Talktalk sales appear to be on the increase again

The group registered 74,000 new broadband customers in the last three months of 2008, making it the most successful quarter of the year and taking the total number of subscribers to 2.8m.
