Title: FF no longer finding short address
Post by: jeffbb on February 08, 2009, 06:01:36 PM
Hi

Until yesterday FF used to be able to find a web page from say "Kitz " or "bbc"it would correctly find the webpage  . Now though if if I try it I get an error page (see attachment) ,with the following URL

jar:file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/chrome/en-GB.jar!/locale/browser-region/region.propertiesbbc

I had FF 3.5  which worked fine until yesterday . Today I have updated to FF3.6 its still the same . has anyone any Idea why ?

Thanks for any help . :)

What are you expecting? I am using 3.0.6 and if I type Kitz it shows a dropdown with all the pages I have visited with kitz in for me to select from.

Hi

Yes if I type in Kitz I get a list thats because they are favourites. What used to be possible was to type in say BBC  press enter and FF would automatically go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/. but not now . :(

regards Jeff.

Have you cleaned out your temp or cache files recently?

Thanks Kitz  doesn't look good .  :)
I have raised the issue again in FF forum

I will try to re install FF from scratch ,

Of : I will also try clearing cache ,temp files

I have other problems !! since installing Avast and Zone alarm , after uninstalling Mcfee. I will raise those in other forum if I can't sort them out .

Regards Jeff

Interestingly if I type kitz and hit enter I dont get this website, I get output from OpenDNS listing all the sites it can find with the word kitz in. So it looks like it is just issuing the DNS call rather than doing what you say it used to do.

The OpenDNS result isn't a Firefox bug, it's a deliberate routing decision by OpenDNS. If you use OpenDNS and  type 'google' in the address bar you get something Google wouldn't be pleased with I suspect. I've stopped using OpenDNS for these reasons, and there are plenty of other good fast free DNS services; I use DNS Advantage (http://www.dnsadvantage.com/) which works well.

I use DNS Advantage (http://www.dnsadvantage.com/) which works well.

If anyone does change to these (or any other settings) make sure you reboot your PC for the new settings to take effect.

(I just found that out by not rebooting)

Thanks for the tip, I've now changed.....

Well you dont actually need to reboot if using a router, just disable and re-enable your lan connection and it will pick up the new DNS.

Hi  all
"  FF no longer finding short address"

Problem is fixed  ;D  it was caused by a FF add on  'Ask Toolbar for Firefox 2.1.0.5'. I got this info this morning from the FF forum (Mark). The funny thing I don't remember asking for that add on nor did Mark  . That's a bit odd :-\. It might have been an option on one of the updates don't know.

Regards Jeff

Yes it was a optional option with one of the Add-ons.

I have to admit, I always read before installing things and disable these type of options and it was included in one of these but don't know which one. These are all I have installed (I think)

Sync tool for networking "Bookmarks" Foxmarks
Adblock plus
Spell checker for FF
IEtab

Firefox to IE
IE View

What does that one do?

What does that one do?
Actually I find it a very nice little shortcut/tool.
It saves having to use the scroll bar to go to either the top or bottom of a page.

You can place a combination of 3 options on the toolbar or/and the bottom "Status bar"

Go to Top of the page
Go to Bottom of the page
or a combined icon which depending on left or right mouse click determines if you go to top or bottom.

So depending on where on a page you are, by clicking the icons you can jump directly to either the top or bottom of a page.

The toolbar option settings are accessed by the normal toolbar settings.

I just use the Home & End keys for that.

Yes, but if the mouse is already in your hand it saves having to go back to the keyboard just to select the up/down button followed by probably then going back to the mouse.

(Left hand is usually holding a drink of some description)
