Title: GPU Cooling
Post by: Imagine. on January 26, 2009, 06:39:13 PM
Hi all, after months of immense GPU Tweaking I seem to have come to a big problem. All those tweaks have lead to increased heat output when Idle my GPU will do 40celcius but under load is goes to about 60celcius is there any thing I can do about this as cooling is the main thing i need to learn about on a PC

Fit an internal fan of some sort?

You mean like one of those PCI fans ?? or an Exhaust fan ??  :)

A case fan would certainly help... maybe pop over to the CA forum and ask in the other hardware section - there are some pretty knowledgeable peeps over there.

Have a look at Zalman fans - which are supposedly the best for GPU cooling.

Heres some pics of a Zalman which was added to my graphics card on my old PC..
which previously kept overheating to the point that it would cause the PC would reboot until it was added.

Original RAdeon 9800XT.  Had already been replaced under manufacturers warranty due to overheating, but still wasnt coping.

Thanks for that kitz I'll look at that brand you mentioned there maybe something cool enough to slay the fiery beast that is my GPU. I just hope if i install this right I can get on with tweaking  :D

EDIT* Seems to be quite difficult to find a cooling system for a 7300GS

When Medion produced that particular PC there was a big batch of faulty graphics cards at the time.
I had mine replaced twice.

Maplin Electronics used to do a good range in Zalman products, but not sure if they still do.

Yah mine was replaced the 1st time within warranty - the 2nd time it was just outside, but TBH (at the time it was a fairly hefty graphics card) the tiny fan and heat sink just wasnt sufficient to keep the card cool if you stressed it out.

Decided it would be quicker and easier to do the mod.

Cant recall where I got mine from now - chris got it for me..  but I'm pretty sure it was from quietpc.com.
I think Amazon also sell them.

The last cooler I purchased was from Eclipse Computers at Coventry.

60degrees is nothing for a GPU.  my 8600gt runs at 90 degs sometimes which is within acceptable running temp.

do u get any artifacts on the screen when stressing it??

I dont see any artifacts when at 60celcius but even that is with Overclock and some other stuff   :)

Tweaking the GPU performance will result in higher temperatures. I do not think 60 C is anything to worry about, especially as your current card is still performing without any noticeable problems.
For a lower temperature, you have two choices.............improve the fan cooling or use water cooling.
As water cooling is expensive, then that leaves the fan. A dedicated graphics fan exhausting directly from the card to outside the case will be the preferred choice. A copper cooler and decent case fan may be an alternative.
Some choices here.

Shame it's out of stock for a while but I can wait :)

Passive cooling will dissipate the heat to the inside of the case. Ensure you have adequate case cooling........a front and rear fan for a good through air flow ventilation. No good having passive cooling if the interior of the case is stuck at around 60-80 C, but I am sure you realise that.(https://forum.kitz.co.uk/Smileys/kitzemotes2/cool.gif)

Of course  :D Hot air + hot air = simply heat  ;)  The casing of my PC is mostly designed for ventilation as the front, right and rear all have vents and I have a small extra exhaust round the back for  when the system temps rise above 80celcius as there is no point in turning that on as I would be removing the air too fast that it doesn't have time to cool anything  :) . See a day of examining my system and learning the fundamentals of PC cooling  ;)

Make sure you use some decent thermal compound to bond the heatsink and chip.

About that I went into PC World for that I couldn't find any that weren't damaged  :( so I asked the "Techguys" if they had any and if I remember clearly his response was and I quote "What on earth is thermal compound"

Don't forget though, there is Thermal compound and there is Thermal compound!

Although probably most of us just use either what we have lying around or just what is on the shelf at the time, but there is actually various viscosities available depending on the specific application.

Even CPU's have recommended types of compound.

As a rule of thumb, a GPU is only overheating when it actually causes a problem. A relative temperature reading doesn’t mean too much if you haven’t had any stability issues when the system is under load.

When I first got my X1950 ATI card with the standard stock cooler, it would idle around 49oC, and whilst playing the likes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with HDR lighting, it would consistently stutter and then crash during certain stages of the game. The GPU was just about hot enough to cook eggs on... and 100oC isn’t uncommon with the high-end cards.

As such, 60oC - in all seriousness - is stone cold.

I ended up buying a Zalman VF-900 cooler and some Artic Silver compound and that made a massive difference. But I only went as far as that because the cooler that came with it was blatantly useless for the intended purpose. If your PC works fine, then all is well. Take those temp readings with a big pinch of salt.

Oh yeah, and PC World are great if you want to buy a generic thing in a box, but that's as far as it goes most of the time. I bought a new monitor from them recently (helluva shiny it is too), but I wouldn't go in looking for honest advice :baby:

Finally recieved a Cooler ordered from ebay  :D works perfectly, my 7300GS now clocks in at 650mhz GPU clock and 1400mhz memory clock, outperforms the 8600GT I've had but never bothered to use  ;D

Before I help thanks for the help guys and kitz for the visual demo of the her old card  Atlast I can uncompress textures in all games  ;D
